I plan on buying an RB20 very soon (almost ended up with a CA), I've waited a few years saving up my little wad of cash. Im worried about swapping in a motor that doesn't run so I wanted to ask a queston. Does anyone try cranking up their engine clips? It sounds logical enough to me. The fuel pump is the only thing that might pose a problem ( err...bucket of gas? JK). I figure this way I could actually take advantage of most shops 30 day start warranty.

I haven't done it but I have a few suggestions. Park another car next to the clip. Go to an autoparts store and buy 12 feet of fuel line. Hook up the fuel lines from the other car to the clip. Fuel problem solved.

Don't forget to change the oil and filter in the clip prior to trying to start it.

The only real issue I see is whether or not your clip actually comes with the keys, but even then you should be able to hotwire it to get it started.

I've heard of it being done all the time, just don't have any specifics for you.

I wish I had started mine in the clip, as I had a 30-day startup warranty, which is blown to hell now (300days now).

Yes you can start them. It is very easy to do. Any reputable shop will start the clip with you there.

As for specifics: You need a fuel pump, fuel, and power leads for the pump. An external fuel pump works best, but I've seen it done with an in tank pump that had been installed in a gas can. Hook the fuel line and return lines up. Give your fuel pump power. Then fire the motor up. I ran my SR front clip when I bought it(actually Chip did it for me). Some companies like cardinalperformance.com will send you a video of the clip running if you are not picking it up.

I know Jarco sends video clips to you of the exact clip you are buying with it running before they ship it. And they say all you need is a "fuel bottle" to start it as soon as you get it, but iunno what that is...

When i went to jarco to pick up my clip they used the "fuel bottle." It was some kind of highly pressurized stuff in a aerosol can that he plugged right into the fuel line. We then hooked up a battery and i turned the key and she came to life. She was pretty loud off the turbo elbow, but she revved pretty well. Michael said the stuff would clean up the injectors pretty good too lol. He then disconnected the "fuel bottle" and we let the motor run until it died to burn the rest. Any reputable seller should start it up for you, if not.... I would be worried.

Well the thing is, I'm on the east coast and there are very few shops that sell motors for decent prices, let alone RB20 clips! So I can't drive over to the place and ask to see it run. You can see why I want to use the warranty right? I'll ask the company if they can start it for me and send a video or something. I can start it myself but I'm kinda worried about just putting a fuel pump in a gas can. Where can you get one of those "fuel bottles" ? Good call on the external pump. I think I might be converting the 240's stock sending unit for use of an inline external. I'd rather run an external pump because there are quite a few cheap options. Thanks a lot guys.

The fuel they are using is fuel injector cleaner. You generally have to buy a regulator to be able to use it. NAPA sells the kits to do it. If you go with JARCO or cardinalperformance.com you don't need to worry about anything. It will be mint.

I'm pretty sure the "fuel bottle" you all are referring to is actually propane. I'm not saying that you should cannabalize your grill for its propane container or anything but I'm fairly certain that's what they use to start up the clips.

Don't cars generally have to be converted to LP gas?

Yellow_Jacket, thanks, i have checked out both and the prices are just too steep for me. I know that Jarco's stuff is always clean but it's still a trade off.

The stuff they use is fuel injector cleaner. It is designed to run the car for about 30 minutes at idle with the fuel pump shut off. I used to use it at the shop to clean injection systems all the time. The bottles are dirt cheap once you have the regulator.

when i started my engine in the clip i found three wires that powered the main fuse box(white/red, red, and red/white?? i think they were), took the column apart so i could start it with a screwdriver (didnt come with a key), then all you would need is a fuel pump in a gas can, dont forget the return line and a jumper box on the terminals under the hood and start crankin. I was extremely relieved when mine finally started and ran good
