I am partially responsible for my friend's car bumping into another car in a parking lot. We were pushing the car while it was in neutral, and he didn't brake, so it bumped into the other car's front. Luckily it left no dents on either car, but on the other guy's windshield, there's a crack. The guy said that there was a crack there before, but it was really small. So here's my question:

If a car bumps into the front of another car, can it make a small crack on the windshield a lot bigger?

Also how much does it usually cost to fix a few small cracks? There is this filling that he wants to use. How much does that cost?

Once a small crack forms on the windshield anything can cause it to get worse. I was trying to remove a rear window from an Altima once and had it shatter completely in my hands when I pressed in the wrong place. Took less than a second to destroy the entire thing.

I always fear lifting a car on a hoist that has a craked windshield. Worried the body flex will make it run across the glass.

So can one of those 30 dollar repair kits fix it? or will it cost hundreds of dollars?

Glass is hardened either chemically or by heat (to the point of becoming "nearly" a liquid), unless you can return the glass to a "whole" and re-harden it, it will continue to crack. I'm not familiar with the "repair" processes out there to fill chips and such, but it could slow the crack.

Glass is a brittle/non-pliable substance, there is no/very little give, especially to piece mounted in a full rigid frame.
