Credit goes to Lino for this idea.

I noticed that the G and the Z sections have tons of organization (Sections) and us Q guys have a measly one section if you don't count the VH, Infiniti Online Mechanic and (Killed Infiniti General section).

If its alright I would like to see the Q section divided like this:

G50 (1990-1996 Q45)
Body
Transmission
Differential/ Drive shaft
A/C and Heat
(Just like in the service manual except for the engine question should be asked in the VH forum.)
.....
......
.....
.....

FGY33 1997-1996 Q45)
Same sub sections as per the service manual

F50 (2002-2006 Q45)
Same sub sections as per the service manual

Nissan President:

PHG50

JHG50

(And one more I am forgetting.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know this is by no means easy but I am willing to do what ever it take to do this even if I have to spend A Lot of my own time. Plus there are only benefits as far as I see such as better organization, less stupid questions....

Plus I am sure with the new forum software we can make it so New members can't post questions in organized forums till they research or accumulate 20-50 posts. Keeping the experience NICO members happy and making sure newbies are happy from less "Flaming". After this Q section is all organized I dare anyone to find a better forum and maybe some of the 2002+ NICO members/Yahoo board members... will come back after seeing what the New NICO is really like.

Credit goes to Lino for the idea!

Edit-In order to be fair I am making a poll for this topic. After all the people are one of the most important parts of the forum.

I think this might have been a good idea a few years ago, but with the traffic in the Q forum in decline, I'm not sure that we should divide things further... My impression of the G forum is that most everything ends up in their general discussion forum anyhow, since that's where it will get noticed.

That is somewhat true. The G section is also growing and we are trying to segment things out somewhat to allow for that growth.

If the membership and Q mods feel a need then Greg would surely consider adding subforums to the Q section.

Q traffic at a decline? You should see the Nissan Quest, detailing, Audio and security sections.

I was thinking of having a newbie forum where anyone can post with a set post number (what ever it maybe) like kindergarten if you will. Once they have learned the rules and some about the car they drive then can enter the regular section. Is it excessive...Maybe but I think its worth it. If I am made part of the staff I am willing to do what ever it takes to move posts to the correct section, what ever.

Of all the forums I have seen not to many do this and I am not sure why but when the Q first came out Nissan took gamble. Plus it easier to merge sections (As see with the Infiniti general Section) than to have people move the topics. Honestly I don't care make me a part of the NICO staff and I will spend as much of my time as possible alone if needed organizing the Q section. Because I never want to see any member leave this section. Without the people who come here regularly newbies are screwed.

Compared to a year or three ago - yes - much less traffic. Some of it was very noticable right after the transition to the new software and is getting better now. My big concern is that we'll get to a point where using the correct forum for a question about, for example, a drive shaft issue, would get someone very few answers vs. if it was posted in a general Q45 forum. So then the member either doesn't get an answer, or double posts, or starts posting in the wrong forum. No answer is bad, and the other two can result in people sniping about double posting, etc. I think your point about the sections specializing in Audio, Detailing, etc. being dead helps illustrate what can happen when we try to segment things out too much.

That said, if there is a groundswell of support for splitting the forum more, then I'll be fine with it...

Well like I said members would be required to search FIRST then ask questions. I am starting to do it and its working out great for me. If members learn to search (Like Maxnix always said among others) then most of the questions would not be asked. Would that be bad? Well it depends I guess, You might have less people posting but then you would have far more smarter people out there.

Heath I am sure back in 2002-2006 dumb a** members like me weren't around hence the nicer and more lively Q section. But I am trying to change and I want to see many other change with me. So that the Q doesn't die a crappy car seen in the ghetto but lives to be a classic car as it is one of the best ever made by Nissan, In My Opinion.

And say for instance a member asks a question that has been answer many many times over. The smart thing to do In My Opinion would be to ignore the member till he learns to search or a nice enough member (Me, Q451990, Lino, Wes...) come along and just answer the question.

In my mind this plan seems fool proof but like I said a lot of work is required to make this happen.

And like I said all that needs to be done is me made part of the NICO staff and I will do all I can to make the Q section a better place. And as far as I know NICO staff aren't paid and I don't want anything but to see the Q section of NICO and the actual car live on for many years to come. I will email Greg a link to this topic in case he doesn't see it though.

Paul, you've tried really hard to fit to in in the Q section from your arrival here, and done some nice work for the community. I think you might be a bit overzealous in your aspirations for content migration in the Q section though, just a ton of work when most people (hopefully) would search, or post prior to navigating through a newly developed topic tree. Nevermind the constant time involved for mods to move posts from one section to another. Cost vs. benefit...

In lieu of attempts at reconstruction, my advice to give back to NICO is to consolidate all the knowledge you've gained since joining NICO and making some spectacular image/video walkthroughs that we can sticky for g50 owners.

I considered doing that before posting this but no one steeped up to the plate in helping me consolidate all this data into a topic: http://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B5VDQiR ... N2I3&hl=en

There is only ONE document out of the hundreds that is 99.9% organized into sections. The reason I needed people was because thats just way too much for any one person to organize. And especially since not many reads the pinned topics. I did the best I could in gathering all the info together and putting it on Google Docs. And if there could just be a pinned topic redirected to that Google Docs site I am sure it would be about the same as spending time and organizing it.

The good thing about that is I found the best topics from some great members (Qship96, Goody90Q45, Lino, Maxnix and others (As for Q45Tech all you have to do is input his name in the search engine and look at any post as it doesn't matter there all great)) and I put them into several documents. I also put the best topics from the Infiniti General Section, VH section, Audio and security Section and some of the Q45 section in a document. That document inspired all this and Maxnix (Brian) sent me a disk of documents that had hundreds more that I have never even seen. Another friend of mine also has a ton of documents but I am not sure if he wants me mentioning that or not.

But it all comes down to the person and whether they come here to stay or just want an answer and go. I am guilty of wanting an answer and almost never posting on Autopia. But I have little knowledge to share when it comes to detailing that isn't already in a pinned topic where I learned all the knowledge.

And really it comes down to this saying "You don't know what you have till you lose it" I used to think my first Q was OK and I took it for granted. But it saved my life at least a couple of times before meeting it end at a tree. So after that first Q I want to learn all I can about the second Q I got to make sure that I can keep it as clean and OEM as the previous owner (Gloucester Q) did.

I'll offer a little input:
As someone who has seen both sides of both setups, I'd say you really need a very busy forum to actually benefit from separate subsections.

If traffic is too low, subforums can actually be a bad thing. As posting is "thinned" across multiple subforums, some will go ignored over time and, eventually, you'll end up with the "general" section being used for everything. As noted above, the G forum gets a lot of traffic and is growing (and is likely to become the busiest forum over the next few years, potentially even supplanting the 240 forums). The Q forum has a small but dedicated group of participants, but isn't likely to get much bigger (unless Infiniti were to bring the model back, and even then most of the potential buyers for the car a new Q would likely be probably aren't the forum-dwelling type).

So, based on that, my view is that the Q forum is left consolidated. That's certainly not an official position, just my opinion.

Infiniti Help and Fresh Alloy are the only other Q45 forums that I know of. But I can say for sure NICO is far better than Infiniti Help. But I am rarely at Fresh Alloy so I can't comment there. And the F50 Q45 is still somewhat new so it can only get better as far as Forum help goes.

I have been to Bob Is The Oil Guy, Noria and Autopia. BITOG and Noria are plagued by Amsoil salespeople and Autopia is plagued by many detailing sponsors. And is in fact owned by a sponsor as the owner gave up the forum. Seems like all the forums are being killed slowly but NICO is still strong, at least the Q forum is.

And just to go over the idea one last time to be sure we all understand:

Q45 Forum
xxx number of post for long time members that have such amount of sub forums (Body, A/C and Heat....)
Newbie forum till xxx posts are reached (Any question that isn't already answered in previous posts is asked here)

Or we can skip the sub forums idea (For members above xxx posts) and at least have a sub forum for Newbies, I think Heath suggested this one time.

Or we can close this topic and have a pinned topic on G50 stuff in a couple of years.

Internet Brands has been buying up all the forums and using them for ad revenue. NICO is a hold out and will remain so.

I think this would be a terribly inefficient move.. Lots of wasted time IMO... Hell I want to see IOM go away so we can just have all the Q45 stuff in the Q45 forum...

From my perspective, I would much rather post the same thing every week for a year than spend the countless hours moving and organizing posts.... its way more tedious than you think... in fact, it sucks.

Q45s have a very small, niche following, and I think the single forum keeps the community in a tight nit situation... Other makes/models have a large advantage with multiple sub forums, the Q doesnt.

IN all honesty, G50s are falling off the planet like rocks off a cliff... whatever it might be, owners not wanting to repair components that are expensive, wrecks, or just sick of the car, the "old Q crew" is a dying breed... Its getting rare to see G50s even on ebay....

What KILLS me is how people fail to see how that just because its G50, FGY33, F50, Y50, whatever else.... They are still CARS! They all have their idiosyncrasies but by and large most of the info thats applicable to other nissans/infintis is applicable to a Q45. We could probably have a Q45/Z32/R32/R33 forum all in one and if no one said what car they had, it would all be close to the same... Nissan doesnt reinvent the wheel everytime they come out with a new car!!!!!!!!

I think making a max post thing for the sub forum stuff is a terrible idea... You are leaving people out, and how are they supposed to accumulate those posts in the first place? I would say everything that is ever needed on a G50, maybe even Y33 has been addressed on the forum... I cannot think of one thing for G50 for sure that has not been on a NICO, if you could think of something I'll buy you a drink or something...

Long story short: The time you would spend "reorganizing" things you could spend using the system that works currently and just answer posts with relevant information!

Great post Wes, I agree completely especially with the xxx post requirement. If we were to break the Q section into sub forums, we might as well kiss the Q section good bye. If you think about it, currently it's just the same members 10 members max posting. A lot of the younger guys were ran away by some of the older members and now this forum is honestly boring now. E.g. even though Unknown007 was a young member, I actually enjoyed reading his posts about his car. He was really trying to learn about his G50, but he got bashed so badly by older members, he doesn't post here anymore. You will have new members that sign up just to get their question answered and then you won't hear from them anymore. I don't have a lot of posts myself, but I know a lot about our Q's and can help most new members with their questions. I only post if I have a question or if I can help someone else. I don't do general chat so my posts are low. I'm sorry but high post count doesn't mean much either. If we were to go to the xxx post requirement, I would be ousted to the newbie section when I'm actually not.

Honestly, I like the way the site is now because if you were to break it up into sub forums, the traffic to either forum would be awfully slow.

The reason Unknown007 is no longer here is because he destroyed his Q BY NOT LISTENING to the boatloads of advice he was given- thats right, he DESTROYED his car.....junk,gone, in the boneyard. Many other recent Q owners we have seen join here have been teenagers and poor people who bought their Q for next to nothing and crapped their pants when the first repair bill came in ......they are no longer active members because they are no longer able to afford to keep their old q on road.....off to junkyard or next sucker to gets sucked in by V8 with pretty paint for a few hundred bucks asking price....never thinking the ongoing expense to keep on road.Sad to say but the 90-96Q is becoming extinct from the roads.......afterall the newest ones{1996} are now 15 years old and who other than the poor or foolish purchases 15-21 year old high mile ancient lux cars?????

Well thats half true because there was a local guy (Bgerner?) I am not sure of the spelling on his name but he did have a 1995 Q45a in a silver color with the rare 1990-1992 Infiniti Q45 interior colors (Yes it was a dark mocha interior). He only came here to get the car running great and he left. It all depends on the person and there time and love for there vehicle.

Johnny Rocket on the other hand left NICO and sold his car on Ebay last I saw, I hate that guys guts.

Berner did somewhat destroy his car but he did the damn best he could by himself and he learned from that car and became a better person for it. The car falling off the tow truck was the final nail in the coffin because the car ran before that, But it had some HLA tick (Due to the HLA's bleeding down after a while?).

This forum is run in such a way that you have to have thick skin to get past the newbie faze and become smart enough to know what its like to maintain a G50 Q45. Now thats not all bad because great things come with time and sacrifice. And after all your being yelled at over the internet so at the end of the day you can turn the computer off and be done with it.

So I accept that the Q45 section will stay the same but I just wanted to put the idea out there, Frankly I am surprised this topic didn't die like my recent ones. Thanks for the vote Rob.

Isn't the reason Unknown was being towed was because his car was a little low (1.5 " clearance IIRC) and he punctured his oil pan? His Q falling off the tow truck was the best thing that ever happened to him. He got a least a couple grand for a car that would have been hard to sell for more than $500, punctured oil pan or not, and ended up with a 240sx and some cash in his pocket. I think he's happy now.

He did lower the car which I forgot to mention (He has balls for that as I would never do such a thing). But according to him the mechanic though in someway a 4000 LBS car weighs less than it looks, So the mechanic used nylon straps or something and they gave way. So because of the tow truck drives incompetence and negligence Berner car was destroyed for good. But if it were me I would have gone further and reported it to the Better Business Bureau, Went on a TV news station....the whole nine yards.

So if Berner didn't lower the car it would have not been towed for that reason.

To be fair to those members, it's not always a case of pants-crapping so much as a sensible acceptance that these aged cars just aren't worth much anymore. I'm sure many of those members purchased the car with the intent of driving it until it needed replacing, but trying to make every dollar go as far as it could. There's nothing wrong with that, if that's all you want out of the car.

Really, what's happening with the Q is the same thing I've watched happen with the 3rd generation Maxima: what was once a desirable car with a following of passionate owners has become 2nd, 3rd, and beyond hand-me-down teen first-car material. You don't see many pristine examples driving around, and the few who still drive those pristine examples are willing to pour much more money into the car than it is really worth. Which is great, but not to be expected of everyone.

It's not a pure result of user-negligence as you like to believe. It's simply a natural result of age. It's the same reason you don't see a lot of 60s Fords on the road anymore. They might be cool today, but in the 70s and 80s they were just "old cars" that no one saw as worthy of keeping on the road.

Yes your right, not many people back then thought there cars would be worth much. I talked to a few people who had some great cars and almost all of them are kicking themselves today for not keeping what they had. Everyone says so-so car will just die, What happens when it doesn't? You think one of the best engines Nissan made and of the best car's they ever made will go down without a fight? I don't and I will never stop believing that. My first Q (1991) I bought not really caring about it much. But I must admit I wanted to add some 1994 OEM Impala wheels to it or keep the existing ones as I though it looked like a hitmans car. But back then I didn't know what I know today thanks this this forum's excellent members. Honestly I work in such a way where if you keep ragging on me I will (Learn) in this case and fight back. But others give up (and go to another forum).

Sure car's are a waste of money to some but so is a house in my option. A car is a like a mini house and if maintained properly it can last indefinitely, same with a house. Except some choose to believe a house is better because of so and so reason.

And Q45Tech is right for not selling parts as God and him only knows how much he has. But right now I am selling some parts to cover some maintenance costs to this car. I just went to Costco and bought two racks ($50) and 12 Banana boxes from Shaws (Free) (They make the best pudding cups). I also printed out some pictures of the body, engine and interior to put on the boxes for organization. Should come put great and I also organized my spare nuts, bolts, screws and washers into separate bags. so all in all I am one of the most organized Q45 owners I think, Can't wait for Q45Techs response!

Thats why they say: "You don't know what you have till you loose it" and "One mans junk is another mans treasure, Unless near dead in a junk yard beyond repair"

LOL!! Oh wow! I didn't know he destroyed his car!! I guess I missed that thread. The last I read he was trying to get something sandblasted at his school. Ok, my fault then...but it is good to listen to the experienced members. I had a K&N in my car when I first joined the site. I took it out after seeing how dirty my TB was after I cleaned it and researched that a simple paper filter was much better than the oiled filter. Other than the sound the K&N created, it wasn't worth it.

Hey Paul, why do you hate Johnny Rocket? Do you personally know him? I was wondering because if you didn't know him personally, how can you hate someone over the e-net?

Seriously? APPRECiation vs DEPRECiation.

That's fact - cars ARE a waste of money. 10k fixing a house becomes more than 10k in future value. 10k fixing a car is a waste of money, plain and simple.

But, if we were all concerned with cost, we would be driving 2-6 year old 4 banger Toyotas. It's just the degree of insane you are to own a car like ours and keep it in top shape. Tech, what's your annual cost on years 15-18 for your Q's? $2400 you said?

Just about $2400 on average and two peak repair years were $6,000-$7,000 [1998 and 1999] so total repairs have been $47,000 over 20 year.

I have saved about $15,000 by using junkers and discount and free labor so really I should have cost $62k or 3100 per year.

Heck my tires cost more than the Q could sell for because of 327,000 miles.

But you much integrate the extra expense [of a heavy used lux V8] with lower insurance and annual tax.

We have a brand new Chev 1500, 99 C43 AMG, 99 Cherokee Sport, and 90 Q............all have a minimum 4 liter engine BUT the Q45 gets the best MPG of them all.

My guess is incrementally the Q45 doesn't cost more than $1,000-$1500 EXTRA ANNUALLY to keep right once you learn what you are doing.

The difference is the amount of time you must spend on research and parts acquisition.

People waste time with familes, mates, dates, and children instead of billing them monthly for paid incurred expenses.

Well I get a call from him about a year ago and he says he wants a Q45 transmission from a 1990-1993. I say I have one but the car was towed with the rear wheels on the ground and he says "I don't care its fine"I told him shipping will be a lot. He says "Thats fine I have shipped many of these in my day and I have a transmission box I will send you to make it easier". I say just to clarify "I have never shipped anything this big and I want to be sure you will buy it, He says "I will buy it". So I go down to the yard where my friend has it at and he tells me he wants $35 to take the car down and pull the engine out. I say fine, you got to lose some to wins some. I tell Johnny I pulled out the transmission but it weighs a bit (Like with all automatics). He says "the transmission case my not work then for some reason". So I go out and get estimates to ship the transmission between $300-$400 and he "says wow thats a lot". I say well it is what it is and I only wanted $150 I think for the transmission maybe less. I would have worked with the guy but its the $35 fee to pull it out that was hurting me.

So some time goes by and I never receive any communication from Johnny and I give it up know I have been burned for $35 and a dead transmission. In the end all I gained was a Torque Converter for pulling out the transmission and looking at the inside of a VH.

So now I do what all junk yards do and ask for a down payment and I suggest anyone parting out a car should do the same because of JACK ASSES like JOHNNY ROCKET!

And I can see this topic is going no where so I give up.
