Can the 2016 Rogue Acceleration Be Improved? It's Embarrassing

Car: Swapped out of my 2013 Pathfinder and got hosed into a 2016 Rogue and am very, very unhappy with the squeaky, embarrassing horn and lack of pick-up. Help!

Post

I just leased a 2016 Nissan Rogue after owning a 2013 Pathfinder. Tough times required a downgrade and some cash-out and I am so unhappy that I tried to kill the hoodwinked deal (Smooth talking, greasy sales-guys and owner got me into an SV-AWD at first with a cost of $27,500 and when I looked at the lease it was $31k. Man did I mess up!).

All that being said, I took it out for a drive on the highway and besides the horn being embarrassing, the pick-up also made me cringe. Up hills and from the start it is frankly pathetic. Yes, I know it's a four cylinder, but really? So that's what brings me here. Is there anyway to get more horsepower out of this engine without killing the warranty with block modifications? I spoke to Stillen and they have no upgrades yet. Nismo also just has break pads. I've looked into performance air filters and chip sets, but non will confirm that they will work with the 2016 Rogue.

Apart from my embarrassment about being duped by these Nissan hustlers at New Rochelle Nissan in New York, I figure make the best of it and at least stop hiding my face when driving the car! :gapteeth:

Going from an engine that puts out 260 hp to 170 hp I'm sure feels like you got the bad end of the deal.
There is the "Sport Mode" button, which basically makes the Rogue rev higher, there isn't much out there for our Rogue.
Also from what I've read, chips do nothing and performance air filter just allow more air into the throttle body thereby increasing hp..maybe 2hp if you're lucky.
You can replace the horns with a set of Piaa's or Hella's.
All I can say is just enjoy your new ride...

Tint you front side windows or do an engine transplant.

Replace your horns if you'd like.

Do not get a "performance" intake or even filter. They are "performance" because they can allow more air flow. This is accomplished by reducing filter efficiency. Not worth the money or the potential warranty issues considering the stock air intake is beyond adequate for your engine.

It's an NA 4-cylinder. Short of FI, you're not gonna gain anything worthwhile.

A proper tune may help should a reputabledyno tuner be able to. Avoid like the plague any "performance chips.". They are all scams, especially the ones that connect to the IAT or MAF sensors. A real tune reflashes your ECU and requires no physical modifications.

If you think the Rogue's acceleration is bad, you should check out the Buick Encore for something that's even more embarrassing. The Encore is 600 lbs heavier and almost a foot shorter than the Rogue. As you know, the Rogue's 2.5L engine is rated at 170 hp, whereas the Encore gets a wimpy 138 hp 1.4L engine that goes from 0 to 60 in 9.2 seconds. Yikes!

That's definitely one slow Buick. I would sure hate to try and pass somebody on the highway with that thing.

If you're in a tight financial situation why would you even consider spending money on vehicle modifications on a brand new car that is perfectly serviceable, much less one that is leased that you'll be giving back in less than three years?

R1, lock it down. This topic is mad stupid anyway. We have a ton of threads talking about making this engine more poweful. If anyone opts to make serious gains, they'll know to use the search function and do real work.
I think the OP wanted some cigarette-lighter plug-in "racing" chip mod for $19.99, plus a free racing chip for a friend lol

My 2014 Rogue has absolutely no power, I k own it's a 4 cylinder, but it's a 2014 nevertheless, shouldn't it have some power when taking off? I can barely merge onto to the highway in fear that it won't pick up enough speed to accommodate what I'm trying to do... Any answer or suggestions would be helpful

Hello and welcome. As for the power its a CVT and you can't just slam the pedal to to floor and expect it to take off. I just take my time and use steady pressure on the gas when getting on the highway. The CVT is belt driven and you have to give it time to catch up. I can easily merge and keep up with traffic and even pass some non CVT vehicles easily. Hope this helps.

The short answer is no. The 1st and 2nd gens essentially share the same engine, which was designed for fuel economy over speed. For merging and passing, make sure the ECO button is turned OFF.
