Actually, no Maxima ever got the VG30DE... too big for the engine bay. The 92-94 SE's had a VE30DE, which is basically like a VG30DE with compact heads.
Internals are pretty much the same (I think the rods may actually have the same part number). Slightly lower compression though (flat top pistons I believe). Transmission bolt pattern is the same as well as the flywheel bolt pattern. Has a forged crank as well.
That would actually be kind of interesting to put in a Z. They make a little less power than the VG30DE stock due to the slightly lower compression and supposedly the heads don't flow quite as well but it should be a little lighter, is definitely more compact, and could easily make some awesome power with a turbo setup... just have to be careful of the VTC's if you get a used engine. They can go bad and will be very noisy (can actually sound just like a diesel engine). If left like that they can cause some major damage. Most either disable them or rebuild them. If rebuilt, use a high quality oil filter and keep up the oil changes with some decent oil and they'll last quite a while.
