Can't remember - Which Maxima came with the VG30DE? GXE?

Have a buddy with a 92 Maxima SE that is pretty much bye bye, and he's giving me the car for free. Is there anything, engine wise, I can use off it for a NA application?

Haven't seen the car yet, and couldn't remember the engine type. I wanted to steal the engine out of it and use it for an (90-93) NA rebuild but wasn't sure which VG was actually in it.

'92 started the VG30DE which was replaced in '95 with the VQ30DE

Actually, no Maxima ever got the VG30DE... too big for the engine bay. The 92-94 SE's had a VE30DE, which is basically like a VG30DE with compact heads.

Internals are pretty much the same (I think the rods may actually have the same part number). Slightly lower compression though (flat top pistons I believe). Transmission bolt pattern is the same as well as the flywheel bolt pattern. Has a forged crank as well.

That would actually be kind of interesting to put in a Z. They make a little less power than the VG30DE stock due to the slightly lower compression and supposedly the heads don't flow quite as well but it should be a little lighter, is definitely more compact, and could easily make some awesome power with a turbo setup... just have to be careful of the VTC's if you get a used engine. They can go bad and will be very noisy (can actually sound just like a diesel engine). If left like that they can cause some major damage. Most either disable them or rebuild them. If rebuilt, use a high quality oil filter and keep up the oil changes with some decent oil and they'll last quite a while.

Ok, ok... I'm done now.

So the same VG30DE that was available in the 90-93 NA, pretty much?

Anybody know if there is anything different, block and head wise, besides the valve covers?

Mark, you suck!!!

Actually, not really. Thanks for reminding me to update the Maxima history page since I still had the wrong motor listed
