Hi folks, I really hate to cross-thread, but I know many people don't venture over to the Online Mechanic forum... So if you would, please read my post at http://www.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=100231

In a nutshell, I am unable to re-shim my DE head after getting it back from the machine shop. There are not shims small enough to make the bucket-to-cam lobe clearance correct. I'd really like the opinion of someone who has or has had a DE head re-built, b/c I need some ammo to take to the machine shop, to get them to do it right.

Thanks for reading.-Jamie

what type of valve job? new valves? if they are the stock valves and you had them remove material from the valve/head area then the valve stem top will sit higher in the guide. the machine shop needs to remove material from the top of the valve stem so it returns to its original height. this should allow you to use a bigger shim.

also, can the machine shop make the correct shims for you? is it not just round stock cut to fit and polished.

or maybe you should seek out deviouska's advice over in the KA forum.

and lastly i looked through my fsm and it states thate the "Valve stem end surface grinding limit" is .2 mm (0.008). i could find no mention of the exposed stem height.

Hey thanks for the reply: these are the original valves, they were in pretty good shape so I was told. Are you saying the machine shop should or shouldn't be able to make the shims? I'd rather them not, just due to labor charges... I havn't priced these from Nissan yet, I hope they aren't more than $5/ea.(the darn head bolt washers were $1.80/ea!!!)

I have gotten devious' attention through email, and he said basically the same thing, that the mach. shop has to return the valve stems to OEM lenght. However there was no mention of the maximum 'grinding limit'....

I hope they didn't destroy my head...

Thanks for the response; the shop is open monday and I'll post back with what the mach. shop has to say.

yeah in the EM section towards the back of section it gives the max grind amt in the bottom of one of the tables.

sounds like they had to get medievil on it to get good seat angles. if so then the valves may be trashed. hopefully they didn't remove too much material from under the head.

i'm interested to know the final outcome when the dust settles.
