Okay I have another question for everyone.

I can't decide to go the cheap route or the expensive route.

I can get a Z31 turbo for cheap. That includes an internal wastegate. I am sure that this will be fine for around 5-10 pounds of boost right.

OR

I can get a t3 super sixty off of ebay for 290 bucks+ shippingAnd then I will have to buy a wastegate also. So in all I think It will cost me about 500 bucks

I can get the z31 turbo and get started on my project nw or wait another couple of months and get the better. I want boost NOW.

What is the maximum boost each turbo can run efficiently? Does it make enough difference to justif spending 350 more dollars?

I already know everyone is going to say go for the better turbo I just need to hear it.

look for a t3 super 60 with an internal wastegate. it'll still be more expensive than a z31, but cheaper that buying a turbo and a wastegate.

do you have all the other parts you're gonna need?

...if you're thinkin a $260 turbo is expensive, I'm guessing you dont have very much money at all.. how is it that you are funding an entire turbo project?

the z31 turbo has a few problems associated with it that I ran into, and hadnt found posted before.

its tough to use the stock exhaust elbow, or find another flange. I had to bottom mount mine, and it appears that the oil return line is going to be a problem. just something to consider.

to see a picture of what I mean:http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/~shersman/turboincar.jpg

I was in the same position as this guy. I wanted to build a cheap turbo, and its important to save everywhere you can.

also take it to heart that once you have all the major pieces there will be a lot of money spent while you are installing it. I had 800 spent on all the parts, now Im going out and buying everything that I need. some oil flanges for the T3, lines fittings, it all adds up. like others say, its good to have 1600 bucks to spend on itSteve

Ive been thinking about this for a while (trying to decide between the cheap and expensive routes). Funny thing is the only difference between them is the turbo, injectors, and management.

My planT3 from Z31 (exh-0.63 A/R, stg 1 wheel -- comp-60 trim??)370cc from SR or VGhacked MAF or piggyback4 bar FPR*

*with this setup, I'm not sure if I'm limited by 370's or the efficiency range of the T3. If the turbo can handle it, I would run FPR to get a little more power. I hope to run about 10-12psi on stock bottom end.

If you know youre gonna use the extra potential, then go for the bigger turbo. It doesnt make sense to use the Z31 turbo and upgrade later on. You might end up spending more changing your I/C pipes than on the price difference between the turbos.Personally, I know that I wouldnt use the potential of a T3/T4 anytime soon (especially w/o rebuilding the block). And a T3/T4 hybrid is probably a better option than the super 60 for your 'expensive" setup.

ftrs13, do you have a pic of the flange the elbow mounts onto (i guess its called the turbo outlet)? Ive been wondering how people use the Z31 turbo. I assumed they tossed the elbow and found a flange to connect for the downpipe. Just curious about your ideas.

man

i started out speccing a z31 turbo for my kit

ended up with a brand new garrett t3/t04e, and i couldn't be happier.

there's a guy on ebay who lets hybrids go for 425 and you've already found the super 60's for 300 - and some of them are advertised as internally wastegated.

be budget-minded, but don't cheap out on anything. remember the $100 rebuild kit for that z31 turbo, etc, etc.

I guess I should have said "Less" expensive route. I think I will go with a rebuilt super 60 instead of the z31. Thanks for the advice

ftrs13 Could you send me some more pics of your install. Im planning on using the Z31 DP too. Did you have to mount the turbo that far back because of the motor mount? Any pointers would be really apriciated as my setup is looking VERY similar.

would a z31 turbo be reasonable for goals of only 250 hp and 250 tq?

I think it just might do it. Im hoping for that myself. I will also be looking into to T4 hybrid upgrade for it if I cant get enough out of it because of the small compressor. The exaust ar is rather large and I think it should flow fairly well. The only drawback is that tiny compressor.

Jonny290, did you get your hybrid from this guy? If so, whats his seller name?

No, I picked one up from Steve at rpsport.net. I paid a fair price for it, given that it was brand new, he had the exact wheels and a/r's that i wanted, and speced it with 360 thrust bearings.

I've not heard anything bad about those ebay sellers; that's all I can say. if their feedback is pretty high, i'd feel safe.
