Can't get shifter to stay in place

I practically finished the auto to manual swap but I can't figure out what keeps the stick shift in place. I put the snap ring in but the inner diameter of the snap ring doesn't keep the plastic collar down. Does the inner rubber boot hold it in place or do I need a bigger snap ring.
