but it will when the engine is not running? thats odd for an auto. is this a manual? if so the clutch may not be functioning correctly. likely air in clutch lines. if its an auto, try removing the shifter "plate" around the shifter and see if you can locate the shift interlock cable. if you can actuate it manually, the trans may come out of park.
