OK, rebuilding a 200k ka24DE for turboing. Have been for a while. I was told by most that I should prolly replace the oil pump. I had the money, so I ordered one through autozone. It came in, and looks nothing like my oil pump. At all. So I checked the part number and its what they list for my car. My stock one is on the left, taken apart and laying on the timing cover. The melling one that I just bought is laying on the box. This can't be right... right? Anyway can someone tell me if I should even bother replacing the pump, and if so where I can get one that actually looks like it might fit my engine?

I second that. It's the SOHC oil pump.

I told them it was a 93 engine. Go yourself to autozone.com and look up the oil pump for a 93 240sx. Sure enough, its that melling. What a crock of ****. The right pump is 170 bucks more.

I drove over an hour out of my way to get the pump cause they had it in stock. I'm gonna contact their customer service department and see if they will give me the right pump for the same price. I've bought hundreds of dollars in parts from autozone over the years, I'd hope they would be willing to make it right.

I was just about to say.

That's definatly a SOHC pump.

I've never seen a DOHC pump, but I guess they're different. You learn something everyday.

Yep. The DOHC pump is $296.63  at Courtesy parts because the "oil pump is built into the front cover". Plain sucks.

I complained to the disrict customer service manager and she said "well, I don't think that they will give you a 240 dollar oil pump for 75 dollars, but I'll have the district manager call you back."

the manager of the store called me, made fun of me, insulted me, and pretty much told me that he didn't care, and I was an idiot, and that the whole thing was my fault anyway and I didn't know what I was talking about.so I got a hold of his boss, the regional manager... and this guy was super super nice, and immediatly offered to make it right by doing an outright exchange for the right pump. One problem, they don't have it. they don't carry the correct pump for the dohc motor!!!crazy!so he said when I take it in to be returned (at a different store, I told him I'll never go back to the first store, on account of the manager's words) he would give me a 20 dollar gift card, and he was sorry for everything. He is going to try to change their catalog to have the right oil pump, and he said he would call me back in a few days.

Didn't someone post a huge list of 100 dollar high flow pumps for our cars a week or so back? Why yes, yes they did!

Your pump is 200 bucks, but still cheaper than from autozone (all the way down on the list). And it's high flow.

yes, I am aware of that. Have been for quite some time, in fact. I'd prefer an oem replacement pump. Still 200 bucks though.

Oy, no be mad! OEM is good, but I doubt this is any worse, and additional flow can help feed both turbo and the rest of the engine. But it is your call.

they can drain the oil pan though. they were designed for use with race engines with loose tolerances, which drain oil back faster than a regular engine, and need a high volume pump to maintain oil pressure. on a regular engine they can increase the oil pressure to higher than necessary levels, and even drain the pan. But... 200 bucks... dude, thats a lot of money for an oil pump.

Also, you have to consider the EASY life that oil pumps lead...think about it, it just sits their spinning in a continuous flow of oil. The gears are VERY hard, and I doubt even after 200k its worn at all. I'd check all the tolerances on it, and if they are within spec...stay with it!

Yea, that's the reason I didn't replace mine when I recently rebuilt. I figure, it worked fine before, so I imagine it'll still work fine!!

the tolerances between the gears are ok... but where it spins on the timing cover there are some circular scratches or grooves. Thats the reason I wanted to replace it. Or are those normal?

I've seen those scratches on both motors I tore apart...I'm assuming they are normal and have no real affect since my oil pressure is still just fine. My oil pump had 116k on it...still gives about 75psi at 3000 rpms. I use thick 20w-50 oil though that probably helps.

scratches are normal. deep gouging is bad. if your fingernail gets caught on it, get a different one.

I can add that the oil pump on the front wheel drive version of the KA24E uses the same oil pump (inside the timing case) as the rwd KA24DE.

I haven't investigated it fully yet, but i've read that shimming the oil pressure relief spring can bump the oil pressure up 10psi or so.
