HEY FOLKS, I JUST BOUGHT A DAMAGED 07 M35X AND I'M GETTING IT FIXED. CAN I PUT STAGGERED WHEELS ON IT? I'VE ALSO SEEN THIS GEN M CLASS WITH A NEWER GEN FRONT BUMPER. CAN THAT BE DONE WITH NO EXTENDED MODIFICATIONS?

I've seen a lot of questions about staggered setup's on AWD cars and from what I can gather it isn't in your best interested to run that type of setup. It can be pretty harsh on the AWD system and may not be worth the headache. Staggered setup's are pretty cool but I myself opted to stay away on my own X model.

Bro's....be sure to know the question before you post, I have had 6 awd cars sport sedans that were awd, yes, you can stagger tire wdth and rim width but you cannot have any tires that have dif diameter size front to rear, I have 255/35/19 on front and 285/35/19 on rear but rims are all 19x9 on my m35x no prob, I had 40's on rear and still had no issues. I think this is what bro was asking, look at Audi's they stagger from factory on the s-line but width not tire diameter. I hope this helps. Bro's don't take me wrong...I'm new to this forum but not new to cars..but I'm hoping to learn more and meet new people here...

Don't take this the wrong way:

I hate calling out people (as I'm generally a nice guy and here to help everyone - reason why I made the FAQ thread) but you are so off that it isn't even funny.

Changing the rolling diameter of the four corners separately on an AWD model M is NOT ADVISED and will only hurt your AWD system. In order for the AWD system to work at it's 100% designed specifications, ALL the corners need to match/have the same rolling diameter.

You can stagger, but you better be damn good at math/calculations to make sure all four corners 'seem' the same to the sensors otherwise the system will go nuts. This means finding a combination of front wheels/tires and rear/wheels tires (that are different) yet have the same rolling diameter. Good luck.

Having 255 in the front and 285 in the back on an AWD system is beyond wrong. Especially when you don't make up the difference in sidewall, etc. Your rolling diameter is WAY out of whack with that setup.

I'm surprised your AWD light isn't blinking like crazy.

Please, search this topic and stop spreading poor information to new users who will only come back with numerous threads like, "Why is my AWD system going nuts!?"

Bottom line: Can you? Sure. Should you? HELL TO THE NO.

As a new user, please use the FAQ thread that is stickied in my signature or in the main thread area. The HowTo for the bumper swap is written up with part numbers, etc.

Thanks.

Bro, as long as your diameter on the wheels n tire match all four corners it works common sense! Audi and BMW has been doing it for years as I have! Get educated before you open your mouth!

Bro, I may be wrong on size cause mine is a 2006, I will ask my mechanic that works for infinity who ordered everything and get back about this cause I did miss the year you posted but all four wheel diameters must match but stagger width is the look to have or I wouldn't have the car and mine has been done for a year...

Diameter? You mean the 19" part?

No. That is NOT how it works. If you look at BMW/Audi tire sizes, you will see that staggered tires run something like 245/45/19 for the front and the rear are something like 265/40 (notice the thinner sidewall)/19 (same diameter you are referring too). Notice the middle number isn't the same. That is KEY.

You need to make sure your rolling circumference/rolling (key word) diameter is the same. This can only be accomplished with calculations to see what the rolling diameter is of each setup. Just having 19" wheels all around doesn't mean jack. Please, do it right or don't do it at all.

As long as all 4 corners tire and wheel diameters are the same the width front to rear doesn't matter. I'm not saying mine wasn't reprogrammed after he did it but I have had no problem and looks great, when I switch back to summer wheels I will send pics but he used his (my mechanic) little computer to figure out what would work and it did is all I'm saying....there is figuring involved that takes time but a real tire n wheel shop can use their computers to do the figuring. Take it or leave it....

THANKS FOLK, I APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT. I'M A NEWBIE HERE WHO'S STILL TRYING TO GET FAMILIARIZE WITH ALL THAT THIS SITE HAS TO OFFER. THANKS FOR THE STICKY SUGGESTION/LINK IlyaKol, ILL REVIEW IT MORE TO SEE HOW TO POST IMAGES AND ABOUT THE BUMPER FITMENT ETC. LIVENLARGE, I SEE YOUR POINT AND IT SEEMS THE RISK OF DAMAGING THE AWD SYS IS QUITE HIGH IF I DO CHOOSE TO DO A STAGGERED SETUP. IT ALSO SEEMS THAT THE MARGIN OF ERROR IS SLIM TO NONE WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING THE CORRECT TIRES SIZE. THAT BEING SAID, I CHOOSE NOT TO GO STAGGERED; RATHER, I'LL TRY TO FIND A SET OF STOCK 19s FOR A GREAT PRICE.

THANKS AGAIN.

I have the same car. I asked that question when I first joined as well. Ilya is correct. It can be done, but it's too much work to do so. From what I was told, even the air in the tires being off can upset the system. It's def not worth the hassle for the staggered look.

As far as the price, thats pretty good. You can prolly pay 2500 to get it fixed and then you have a nice car for less than 10 stacks ! good stuff !!!

IF ROLLING DIAMETER IS THE SAME FRONT AND BACK IT WILL NOT BE A HUGE ISSUE. I have had a staggered setup on my m35x before, as well as a few different awd cars

Ilya, you are correct it is all in the math.

It is all about the tolerances between the rolling diameter. Since we did not design these complicated traction control systems nor did the infinti mechanics have any hand in the design and execution of these systems, it best to leave it these type of issues, questions and analysis to the engineers that designed, tested, broke and redesigned the systems.

Just Saying...............

Great :) in that case worrying about staggered fitment is in place. I have a rwd w/ staggered setup so I wont be help but it makes sense not going this route on awd just for the peace of mind  btw post sime pics of the car repaired.

Folks, staggered wheels are definitely not recommended for the Nissan ATTESSA system used in the AWD Infiniti models - I have spoken with Infiniti engineers on this topic and confirmed this statement.

The system relies on measuring the differences between the front axle and rear axle rotations for its normal operation and may not work properly if the difference is large enough. In some situations, the wear and tear of the AWD system will be greatly accelerated and cause problems later on.

You may think that staggering the front and rear wheels could be compensated for, by selecting different size tires, but this is simply not good enough. The rolling diameter of a tire changes as the velocity changes for example. So, what might be close at one speed may be too far at another.

Most tire manufacturers don't even specify rolling diameter - you have to calculate this carefully from the "revs per mile" number (if it is available) and this is usually at some set speed. Different tire material may also flex differently - particularly when the tire aspect ratio is not the same.

Indeed, different tire brands/models of the exact same size may have different revs per mile! This can be seen from the tire specs ...

So, while staggering may have "worked" for other car models as mentioned in some post above, please stick with identical wheels, and identical tires, on our Infiniti X models.

NOTE as an FYI: I did not say "stick with the OEM wheels", I said "stick with identical wheels". So, if you want to change the wheels to something other than OEM, just get four identical ones and put on four identical (size and brand and model) tires.

Z
