Brand new Frozen Rotors installed 2 weeks ago by Infiniti dealership around here. When I got the car back I noticed the calipers had whatever this brown s*** still lathered all on the outside of them and already on the rotors. I figured it would just come off by itself. And now it's spread. It's kind of stuck on there ...can't be rubbed off. Is this just lube? And if so why the hell did they not clean it off before giving me the car back?

It looks like this on all 4 rotors.

Apologies for subjecting you to the horror that are my banged up wheels. I'm getting those refinished soon.

That would be called rust. Either you can get some caliper paint and clean them up and paint them or let it be.

It is called rust and will develop on any rotor.

I don't understand.

Why did my rotors with 35,000 miles not look like this? And why when I look at the rotors of any car beside me that isn't an old pile of s***, do I not see this???

My friend's RX330 that has 100,000 miles on it is outside and his rotors are not even CLOSE to looking like this. And I know he didn't clean them with anything.

This looks so ghetto. All of your guys' rotors look like this too????

These things are f'ing 2 weeks old. Forgive my ignorance but rotors aren't covered in something that prevents this???

I mean it's not like it's inconspicuous. The s*** is BRIGHT orange. It looks hideous. Normally I'm fine sacrificing looks for performance but I paid like 600 bucks for these things and I'm supposed to drive around with them beaming in rust?

What color would I use to paint these if I was going to do that?

The center of the rotor at the hub I would paint with some quality caliper paint...either black or silver. The challenge will be the rust on the outer rim of the rotor..... good luck. Rust sucks.

Did you see the rotors before they were put on the car?

If these are brand new I would talk to the manufacturer about them. Thats not OK.

Sure rotors get a bit of rust on them at times, but that is way beyond normal in my opinion. Especially for two weeks. If you had parked your car under a tree and not driven it for 6 months i could understand, but i agree with you, that looks like crap.

well, I attack rust by spraying some WD-40 on top ( removes surface rust) allow it to dry, or wipe it off ( if time is of the essance ) and get some anti rust paint, that will match the color of the rotors. ( but hey this is just advice )

Personally I think you are overreacting. I have seen the same on my M45 from time to time. It happens when it sits outside in the rain or damp/foggy air. Once you drive and brake and/or the weather dries out it goes away. I have seen this on tons of cars.

The pic of the front end of your car looks great - No offense, but I would not be worried about some minor rust forming in your new rotors, I would be more worried about that awful curb rash you have on those rims - Ouch! That's the first thing I saw on your pictures

As mentioned by everybody, it is just rust.

All rotors, unless Zinc or Nickel plated, will do this since they are made of iron. It is common, although much more rapid than I would have thought after 2 weeks. Have you had a lot of rain where you are? Or driven through many mud puddles or something?

Regardless of which, rust has no effect on the stopping power, etc., since it is not where the pad would prevent it from forming. If you do attempt to clean and paint it, make sure not to get any paint onto the areas where the pad touches the rotor - this may be too tough to do though.

FWIW, most of us just live with the rust and ignore it.

BTW, what was the brand of the rotor originally? If not made of quality dense iron material - the weight of the rotor is very important for heat dissipation capability - you may have less than good quality rotors. Many cheaper brands from the Far East fall into this category.

Not unless you buy Zinc or Nickel-plated rotors. The bright orange will darken to more of a brownish color after some dirt gets on them.

Just remember that the rotors get hot when braking, so you have to be sure that the paint is capable of handling that heat.

Please also be careful not to get the paint where the pads touch the rotors when braking. That could compromise your pads and/or braking.

ya I was going to say that the rotors probably are not zink coated. But even still, 2 weeks is pretty fast.

I just put on some TriNet rotors a few weeks ago, I got them coasted with black zink. They looked great then, and look great now. No sign of rust at all. Next time you order some rotors make sure to have them coated.

These are Frozen Rotors.

When I get my wheels refinished I'm going to get something done about this. I will never be able to relax seeing this every time I look at my wheels especially when I get them all nice and new looking and I can still see that through the spokes.

I can't have that on my conscience. Hahaha

Here is some interesting (old but still relevant) Information on different coatings:http://www.finishing.com/421/22.shtml

If you really want to get rid of the rust, and its worth a kings ransom to you:http://www.edmunds.com/ownersh....html

Any way there is solutions to your problem (while not technical in nature problem) - you can spend what you want and likly find a way to avoid the rust - chances are for this class of car, they dont make anything that will fit the bill - but there is a good deal of cars that come OEM Carbon Fiber or Ceramic brake systems..

any ways, enjoy - this was mostly for your entertainment value...

Not on plated ones like the Stillen Brembos!
