Common, loose, contemporary meaning for "retrofit" simply means to make something work with something it wasn't designed for (like installing a set of altima tail lights in a Maxima).

The original meaning referred to the use of newer technology on something that was designed before that technology. Something like adding 4 wheel disc brakes or power steering to a '60s musclecar.
