Sort of.

The whole point of the shroud is to maximize the suction capability of the fan. Especially at stops.

Without the shroud, at idle, the fan is blowing straight onto the engine. It helps only minimally. It's the coolant that you are trying to cool down, not the engine. So with the shroud in place, the fan is circulating air coming in through the radiator, thus cooling the fins and the coolant flowing inside.

Now as I said, sort of. Your cooling problems are indicative of other things as well. It could be the thermostat is crapping out, the water pump could be binding up, incorrect coolant/water ratio or level. Hell, even your ignition timing could be off, causing lean running which in turn burns hotter. (Or is it the other way around?) Well you get the idea.

Any way take this as a sign to do some coolant system maintenance and save a head gasket repair.

Also, invest in a water temperature gauge. Cheap insurance. I know my Autometer has more than paid for itself already by showing the waters temp.

They don't call it maintenance for nothing.

I have actually gotten into the habit of replacing all hoses and belts, gear oil and coolant every 2 years, and do a complete flush of every fluid annually. Usually Father's Day weekend.

Yes, I have owned my 240 that long.

your original post says you put a new engine in your car, before you ran it did you possibly happen to bleed the coolant system? (the 10mm bolt right behind the coolant temp sensor) that would be my guess, other than regular maintenance as previously posted.
