can they be rebuilt?

also, how difficult would it be to put an engine in by oneself and save the $3000 installation price that the dealership will charge?

it's possible. But,Most agree it is much more cost effective to get a used take-out engine.

The tolerances on those engines are beyond the capabilities of 'most rebuilders.

It is not an easy installation compared to some others ( I think the dealer charges 20 hours for it), also the engine has to be installed from the bottom.

So you'd need to borrow/rent a lift. But I am sure it can be done.

Perhaps we will hear from the ole' pros checking in on this issue again, but one of the pros down South indicated only 1/4 of the pulls they check are worth consideration, and then they end up usually putting in a fair amount of extra work (Cover Reseals, 02 Sensors, Under-plenum hoses, CAS . . .) into them to the tune of several extra thousands to get them back to an acceptable state.

Sooooooo - just snagging the engine is only a starting point - a pretty expensive proposition, but not bad in the great scheme of things if you want to keep a Q on the road and continue to enjoy it !

mmss:

it is generally tru that many pulls are low quality and 4 digit R&R work is a given.

The %age is much better with japanses t/o though (still ned extra work too)

Also currently one member of this site has an immaculate used Q engine already fullr R&Red for sale in Buy/Sell section.

Recently in Buy/sell a another really good pull was sold by T3.

rebuilds are simply beyond the capability of almost all shops short of hibuck prof racing shops, which makes the engines same privce as a new one from Infiniti.

I heard of a couple of domestic rebuilds done by very good shops and neither one was w/o issues.
