Hi guys... Yes its me... the one with all these technical questions.... I HAVE searched and it prob IS the timing chain but I just wanted to make sure.

I have a '89 fast back and I started the car today and I hear this "ticking" sound coming from what it looks like the front of the valve (I can be wrong) but anyways it ticks constantly pretty fast and seems like the higher the rev is the faster the ticking. When I would rev up the engine I can hear the ticking speed increasing, after I drove around for about an hour, the ticking stopped but started and stopped and started and kept going on and off.

So... is it the timing chain? or the injectors? IF it is the timing chain is it something THAT important to get it fixed right away? and how about if it was the injectors?

Thanx in advance. Sorry for the long post

get a lonnng screw driver put one end on your ear and put the other end where u suspect the sound is coming from. Then you can pin point if it is or not. Is pretty cool you can hear all these cam spinning and other sound. lol

Most likely something else... if it was the timing chain, you would hear a loud rattle for a couple of seconds at startup, maybe a little rattle on acceleration, but not much of a ticking sound.

That's weird why it would start/stop after an hour though...

You should do what the Just another 240 said.... take a long screwdriver to anything you think might be making the sound, could be a loose bolt or something. Just make sure you don't touch any moving parts, lol

Yeah, could be the water pump if the bearing on the inside was going out.

And for the fuel injectors, are they leaking gas? Cuz they usually do that before they go out, at least they are on my 89.

it almost sounds like what mine did (ask nathan how that turned out.....booom)...is it SOHC? if i were u i'd pop the valve cover off and take off the upper timing chain guide and see if that fixes it. It could just be ur lifters.....they rattled like hell in my old eclipse, sometimes worse than others. I *HATED* that noise....both the lifters and the timing chain.

If you haven't changed your timing chain, you should do it now at 160K. I know I had to because I had that ticking sound also, I took it to 2 mechanics and they both said it was the timing chain, and I had 114K on it at the time. Now my motor is all silent and will last another 80K possibly.

the timing chain has been replaced about 2 years ago.... anyways i was tryign to pin point the tinking sound today and it seems like its coming between the intake maniford and the valve....
