Wheel width range for a 225/45-18 tire is typically 6 to 8 inches. Using 7" would be ideal, of course, but anything in that range ought to do.
Going outside that range is the "stretch" look - particularly if the value is way beyond that range. Unsafe ... but some people think it is cool.
An 8.5" wheel width may not be dangerous per se, but certainly not give you the best results for tire wear and handling - you may have to compensate with tire pressure adjustments to get it right.
Finally, as mentioned above too, it is not clear that going narrower than 245/45-18 will help the tramlining - I don't think anyone really knows that outcome. The only success stories here, have been replaced tire brands and models.
