Wow you guys really need to use the search button. Ok since I have a 95 I will try to answer this.

Without a CAT there is no way in hell you're going to pass smog, bottom line. I'm in the Marines and stationed in Cali (currently in Iraq) which you know is the worst place to try and smog a 240SX with mods. I have a Hotshot header, 2.5" Test pipe instead of the CAT and an APEXi 3" N1 exhaust. The loop hole I have for this is I am military so I register my car in my home state, which luckily for me has no smog law! That means that when I get pulled over or whatever happens the CA smog Nazis can't touch me. I don't blow any smoke either but a buddy of mine who does smog laughed at me when I showed him my set up. In Cali you have to pass a comprehensible visual as well, but that might not be your case as smog varies state to state. First you need to visit the place you are going to use to smog your stuff and ask them what they do and what they are looking for. You may very well just have to pass the sniffer but like I said it varies.
