Hi,

I have a 1995 240sx. I want to remove the airbag and keep the OEM wheel, center and horn. Technically, cruise control would still work also, until I get around to removing that as well. I have an FSM and I have searched, but no one seems to do what I'd like to. They just swap in other steering wheels. Perhaps for a good reason.

So, I would like to know if I can gut the air bag and explosives from the steering wheel assembly. As in, can I pull the center airbag assembly out, then remove the innards, then put the rubbery plastic shell and hopefully the metal frame back onto the steering collumn? If so, great! How do you recommend I go about doing it?

I don't have my torx drilled out yet, so I can't tell by visual inspection if it's possible. Anyone have some experience here to share?

...the second picture shows the airbag assembly from the wheel from the back side. It looks almost like I could take out the four nuts shown and remove the airbag, but I'm not so sure.

#1 get a tamper proof torx kit at sears ( mine has a bunch of tamper bits in the grip and it was cheap )

#2, take it off and start taking crap apart. It isnt energized so it wont "explode" just dont jab or cut anything and be dumb etc. I remember pulling mine off years ago and i remember it was bolted in there, possibly to replace if it goes bad? But, if your wanting to get rid of it and not use it for safety, then whats the worse u can do?

the four security nuts on the back of the wheel hold on the explosive part in a metal case under a plastic sheild. A 3/8ths socket works and the assembly can be removed. The airbag is all folded up nicely in there. You could grind off some small rivets and take a razor to the bag and slowly remove that as well, but I'm leaving mine in case it all goes back together.
