Does anyone out there no if I can bypass the catalytic converter? I just found out that the converter is bad but the mechanic doesn't know which pipe it is and that I need to send it to a muffler shop to have them clean it out. The car starts but want stay crank when you press the gas. And also a ball park figure at how much.

I dont know if SC has emissions.. But youd have to cut the cat out, gut it, and reinstall...

I dont know how much a muffler shop would charge...

He couldn't tell me which one, but he stated it needed to be replaced but then he said that it needed cleaning. He also stated that it would cost me some money. I'm just trying to find a easier way out of this situation. I knew someone that took the converter off his car but you could smell that strong scent from the gas. I think there is an emission law here in SC.

Thanks for the input.

Don't forget about the federal laws and the clean air act of 1990. "Needs cleaning"? Ever hear of a self-cleaning oven? What's he going to do, put it in an oven and heat it up to 1400*, then blow hot gas through it? Or just leave it on, drive the piss out of the car and then send you the bill? Surely he isn't planning to actually scratch the core surfaces with anything, is he?

No emissions tests in SC - at least in Columbia - but I think you need more information. With this problem and your potential CAS issues I think a trip to T3 in Atlanta would be a very good idea.

These links may provide some information on the regulations concerning converter replacement. http://www.dynomax.com/super_install.st ... om...v.htm

I would definitely consult with a reputable shop experienced in catalytic converter replacement.

I believe these regulations only apply to cars registered for highway use. Cars used soley for racing on private tracks, etc. wouldn't be affected, but I doubt that's the case here.

How many clogged cats have we heard of on early Q45s? I think there's something going on with this car and everyone has a theory... basically "lets throw parts at it until we find it" by techs. that don't have any Infiniti experience. My thought is that Alamda needs to get the car to a dealership or make the trip to T3 (preferably T3). You can spend three times as much guessing around a problem that's not being diagnosed vs. getting it fixed right the first time.

cat Convertors are relatively fragile, An intermittent misfire can overheat and melt them. Oil consumption can deactivate and plug them. Real rich running can plug them with soot. Water will destroy them. That they last over 150K miles with normal treatment is fantastic. My wife's 92 (actiuve) with 140K easily passes the tough EPA mandates for Houston tx.

Minor concern to minors. A felony criminal citation will age one quickly.

I think you're being a bit dramatic.

Its my understanding that by sharing speeding and street racing stories, we've already advocated law breaking. Flying down the road at 140mph is more urgently dangerous than killing a spotted owl, cute as they are.

"Making driving at 30 mph or more above the limit a felony would be a dramatic step, but Hawaii would not be the first state to make dangerous speeding a felony. A Michigan law defines felonious driving as driving "carelessly and heedlessly in willful and wanton disregard of the rights and safety of others" in cases where no one was injured or killed."

But talking about speeding vs suggesting [or aiding in a FEDERAL FELONY] is quite a different matter......vs some puny state traffic law.

Cars without convertors reall smell bad with our garbage fuels now......especially those running with ethanol oxygenates.
