Some '03 (mid model year running change) and all '04 I35s are apparently prewired for satellite radio. I'd like to be able to install this factory solution in my '01 I30 if possible, but am not sure what components would be required beyond a headunit from an I35 with the requisite satellite radio connector (which I assume is just plug and play). Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

On a related topic, even if I can't install factory XM is there any compelling reason to install an I35 headunit? I know it has an indash 6CD, but I have the 6CD in the trunk of my car already. Does the I35's head unit support the trunk changer?

Since your car is not pre-wired for SAT radio, your other options are - AUX input, cassette adapter or FM modulator (wired or wireless). Best info for SAT radio installation is from Grubbs, link below. You can also check Crutchfield.
