Looking at HID conversion kits for my fogs and my Wifes car as well. I'm seeing things I definately like on ebay from another member referral (rocastro71) gave. But what is Can-Bus and do I need it? FYI my wife has an 09 Odyssey.

Thanks in advance

here is the post I found the Ebay link.
rocastro71 wrote:I too did the same with H11 LED and was not happy with it. The 6K LED while the color is pure white does not travel far enough to see. I got this from VLEDS.com but sent them back.http://www.v-leds.com/Exterior-LED/DRL- ... 10634.html. I went ahead and change them to Philips 6K HID kit I bought on ebay like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...ories. Actually same seller.

Controller–area network

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Controller–area network (CAN or CAN-bus) is a vehicle bus standard designed to allow microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other within a vehicle without a host computer.

It was designed specifically for automotive applications but is now also used in other areas.

Development of the CAN-bus started originally in 1983 at Robert Bosch GmbH.[1] The protocol was officially released in 1986 at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) congress in Detroit, Michigan. The first CAN controller chips, produced by Intel and Philips, came on the market in 1987. Bosch published the CAN 2.0 specification in 1991.

Actually, there is such a thing as a CANbus in your car. But, what it has to do with the original request associated with lighting is not clear yet.

Anyway, the CANbus is the network and protocol that allows signals to be sent around the car to the various processors for allowing functions to be performed.

For example, in the "old days", the switch for the headlights were direct connected to the battery and the actual lights. Meant hefty individual wiring carrying high-current everywhere.

Today, the switch sends a signal to a local processor, which inserts a signal on the CANbus, that tells the processor in the engine compartment to engage a relay to do the same job.

May seem more complex (and electronically it is), but the result is far less high-current wiring everywhere in the car.

There are lots of articles on the topic on the Internet ... do a search for "CANbus" to understand more details. It is quite a techie topic though.
