Can ANYONE tell me where the wiring is routed for the rear hatch?

Getting so frustrated with not having power to anything on the hatch. Third brake light, wiper, or defroster. The defroster is the biggest item, because in the winter with no rear defrost = teh sUx0r

Everything on the hatch itself is connected correctly - just noting gets power. You can hear the relay clicking for the defroster when you press the button but it doesn't light up.

How did I know you were going to be the one replying...

So up in the headliner then? which side, passenger or driver? Does it go up through one of the front pillars?

For all these things to not work, I'm guessing there is a connector/harness somewhere. Maybe underneath where the fuse panel and other electricals?

yeah, definitely check fuse panel and connectors, not unless you had a leak in your roof or something getting in there to damage the wires.

Now if I new which connector.... I would say everything under the roof liner is good.

lol I try to reply to most of these threads unless you guys got it all under wraps.

Coming off the harness from the hatch, you'll see three plugs (since you've the wiper as well). They should be clustered together, the other plugs you should see clustered together are for the seat belts and the right side door pin. You can follow the harness, it's biased towards the passenger side and will connect to the rest of the harness running from the tail lights on the car.

The ugly part about this is that it's connected to the main harness. There are several possibilities that I'd suggest checking, they're all grounds though. Since you've got all three of those devices not working, they probably share a common ground which can be anywhere along the back end of the harness. There should be one at the middle of the tail lights, and another three or four further along the harness towards the front of the rear driver side wheel.

You ever try to look so deep into troubleshooting a problem that the answer was right in front of you right from the beginning?

Well I found my problem. I was out checking connections etc since it is warm out today and guess what. I decided to pull out the rubber grommets that the wiring for the hatch goes into the roof of the car. The power wire on the driver side, complete seared off from age. The passenger side which has the wiring harness for controling whats on the hatch looks to have just one wire damaged.

I feel so stunned!! Anyways I found the prob and now I have to figure out how to reattached the main power wire because theres not much sticking out from the roof to work with.

oh well. i repaired the wires best I could, the ground wire portion on the driver side has like a plastic core or something running through the middle of it.

Anyways, still nothing works.

Time to rip off that rear wiper and plug the hole.

I did that but still can't get power. That, and well now I have a wiperless hatch. Looks alot cleaner :D

I still would like to have my defrost/defogger working back there though.

That harness that runs down the right side of the hatch is a pita to get out. I stripped the wiper and rear defrost of mine out and man it was up in there good.

Old thread but I found the solution, well I found most of the problem. I've since removed my rear wiper so the fact that it didn't work doesn't matter anymore.

The right side of the hatch has a power and ground for the rear defrost on the driver side. Those were frayed. It is essentially a wiring harness so I'm going to try to score another one rather than repair it.

The passenger side is essentially the wiring harness for everything in the rear, the third brake light, defrost signal for turning it on, the wiper etc. Well all those wires save for like 2 were frayed and severed. Patching them up, got my third brake light back and soo the rear defrost will be back.

To add to this; I had a similar problem w/ no wiper and defrost but i had NO brake lights working; I repaired that harness and they all worked again, so I'm assuning the harness in that area was grounding against the body and blowing the Tail fuse. So if nothing behind your c pillar works, check that stupid wiring harness that passes into the hatch on the Pass side, it gets pinched and eaten by the hatch after time. Mine was a big mess of melted copper and plastic, every wire was gone. Good thing for fuses.

driver side: antennaspassenger side: electrical stuff like wiper, brake light and defroster.Inside the car, those harnesses end under the rear passenger B pillar cover.

Hope this helps!!

Actually driver side also has a ground for the rear defrost - which is intertwined with the antenna ground.
