I do not totally understand everything that goes on beneath my Q…I’m leaning slowly but I am just wondering something, is my Qx4 ok? I’m not a retard but rust is bad and I know that. I know the common problems Qx4’s have of the running boards rusting out…I’m no stranger to this as mine are rusting right along . But based on the picture I post on this forum, is mine rusting more than average? 1999.5 Qx4 with 85,000 miles on it.

Rust isnt "bad", as most of it is just surface rust and harms really nothing but cosmetics, but those running boards look like they are CHEWED through by rust. The only thing you really have to worry about rusting is your frame and floorboards

If you wanna help slow down the process, go grab some black tremclad rust paint for $4 a can, take 20 min to do, dont have to tape anything off under there

Your cars fine though, from your rear axle forward actually looks damn minty

Im from canada, rust is HORRIBLE here, thats why I got my Qx4 from florida!! Hadnt seen snow/salt I bet til this year

Yeah...I can’t help but think of the days when I stood on the running boards...hey what the heck that’s what they are made for right? WRONG damn I am so glad they didn’t snap off....that would be game over for me, without access to a wielder or anything. I went to my local infiniti dealership to ask how much they would charge for 1 NEW RUNNING BOARD…any guesses, 1,300$. They guy laughed at me and said I was an idiot if I bough it. Ha

Like WOT said throw some tremclad paint on them to protect them, it will def slow it down, I wouldnt stand on them though

If you dont have a welder, you can buy them EVERYWHERE, you can get a nice one for $3-500 with tank, or get an electric 100amp one (that will weld that no problem) for like $200. Saves ya money and youve got a welder..... Or theres ALWAYS people locally in the paper looking for side weld jobs, they charge like $40-60/hour.

Hell, you could get a shop to build one from SCRATCH for less than the dealer cost But you dont have that problem yet

The car pictured hasnt been sprayed ever in its life it doesnt look like, not in the past few years anyways

Why would it hurt anything? Oil spray would just go overtop of it. Oil spray effectively does the same thing as spray paint would do, create a barrier between your cars body and the corrosive composites ie salt water etc

makes sense. the krown dealer that does my oilspray said that it makes it ineffective if you add any kind of tremclad or spray overtop...maybe they meant after the oil was applied

Oil spray is easy to do but I dont like the wet mess afterwards, costs ya $1.13 to do that one yourself, dollar store paintbursh, 4L of oil from your last oil change (you actually save since u dont have to dispose the old oil), apply to bottom of vehicle or pieces wanted, drive down DUSTY dirt road for 5 min, accept $85 from customer

i guess you would want a good layer of dust/dirt would help the oil as it would stick to the applied surface

I say take the boards off, Suvs look better without them imo, unless you're like 4 feet short then keep them on

Makes me glad I live in Idaho. We rarely see rust on a car here.
