My WD My Book 500gb took a s*** on me last night. No idea why, but I have over 400gbs of data on it, so I'd like to be able to fix it. Before, if you plugged in the power cable without plugging in the usb cable to a computer, it wouldn't power on. No lights would light up or anything. This is how it's suppose to work, but for some reason I plugged it in last night and before I plugged it into my computer it lit up. I thought, well this is odd, but I went to plug it into my computer and then noticed the light was actually flashing off and on every couple of seconds. Now, everytime I plug the power cable in, it does this. I found several issues of this through google, but no answers. I even found on WD's website that it is known to do this when plugged into a computer and the computer goes in power-save mode. It's a result of the drive 'spinning down' Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check the owners manual to see if that light combo is some kind of error code?

Last resort would be to take the drive out and put it in the computer and just get the data off of it that way, Assuming the drive is still good.

IF the drive itself isn't bad/damaged/corrupted - pull it from the external case and either put in a different external case or plug inside your desktop (check the master/slave/cable select settings on the drive) and see if you can access your data that way.
