When my 99 max with auto goes into o/d and I'm driving 60 mph or so, the rpm's stay at around 2200, but if I release the gas, they stay at 2100-2200...until I touch the brake pedal. I won't even press it down all the way to feel brake pressure, all I do is tap it once, i hear like a click noise, and the rpm's go down to around 1800. And this isn't the only gear it does it in, what is going on here?

Sounds like the torque converter unlocking to me, but I'm not all too knowledgeable about autos so I'm not completely sure.

the same thing happend when i had my 95 automatic. that is just how they are because i spoke with my transmission guy from nissan about it. i was also concerned. basically feels as if the car goes to neautral and the rpm's drop asthe speed drops also correct? if so, perfectly normal.

Yeah, that's what happens. It's so weird cuz it feels like it's not going into o/d deep enough. When I'm doing 60, I'm at like 2100-2200 rpm's, and I thought that this was a little high. This is one reason why I wanted a 5 spd!!! Thanks for the help!

Just to let you know, the 4AT sits at a lower RPM in 4th gear than the 5-speed does in 5th...your auto has MUCH longer gears than the 5-speed.

Ooooh, I know it's got long gears, annoys the hell outa me. Top speed in 2nd gear is 72 mph, but no low end with the long gear ratios! I gotta deal with it, though, cuz a 5 spd conversion's outa my budget!

you know, the five spd actually does 60 mph at 2500 rpm. i was so surprised when i got mine and i asked around and thats how all nissans are. they have short gears.

Wow, really, no kidding. I was wondering about the 5 spds. I've seen, driven, and ridden in a lot of cars and the norm top gear rev at 60 mph is like 1800, so that's why I was asking. Thanks!

not all nissans.

my truck (auto) doesn't hit 2500rpms until 80-85mph.its at 2000rpm at 70mph. granted, it does have a 5spd auto....
