There's a 240SX (S14) that I'm looking into buying. Apparently the engine blew, so I could get it really cheap. So I'd just go with an SR20DET right off the bat, and probably make it into a verifiable Silvia before I ever would have the chance to have it inspected and registered.

Moving on, I have a presence in 3 states. Currently, I could deal with either Maryland or New Jersey, and come this September, I'll be able to deal with Florida.

Is it possible to get a Silvia to pass inspection in either Maryland, New Jersey, or Florida? If so, can someone tell me what I need to do to make it legit? I want to know this before I make an offer on the dead 240sx.

Dealing with Maryland would be ideal, since the insurance rates aren't too bad (Jersey is hell) and you only need to inspect the car once per ownership.

From what I understand, Florida will be the most lax with regards to smog. Although, Jersey might not be bad either. I've been told that Maryland smog is very similar to California smog, which BLOWS GOATS.

Where ever you get it registered, figure out what kind of inspection you need to do when you change owners. I know that here in CA, you need to get it smogged before you can get re-register it.

,run high octane fuel, retard the timing 2 degrees, and run at lowest boost.

Florida - would sail through, they don't give a hoot.

New Jersey - depends on the station, their mood, their automotive savvy and how much $ you are willing to waive in front of them. NJ is chemically as strict as CA, it just doesn't have the visual requirement. If you can pass the sniffer, you will be ok.

Maryland - see above, but probably somewhat easier than NJ since I think they test for less pollutants (I remember a member passed his SR20DET through MD smog on the first try)

umm. last time I checked those are all illegal motors (and probably won't meet smog or inspection), so his question is still valid. way to be wrong

back on topic, florida rocks. they really don't care what you drive/do to your car. no one ever sees it (DMV, insurance, Police, etc...)

ahh nevermind I get your question...

you're mad that he asked "will a silvia pass inspection" rather than saying "will a silvia powered 240sx pass inspection" :rolleyes way to be anal!

everyone just chill out. as far as i know, no engine swap from another chassis is technically 'legal', but most states dont really care. ive heard florida is pretty loose..

there are MANY places that have no idea what motor is supposed to be in a 240sx and as long as your swap is really clean they wont even question it...if you make sure you have a catalytic converter and whatnot you shouldnt have TOO much of a problem passing...i hear lots of people do it...either that or see if you can get someone to pass you for a couple extra bucks

Thanks for all the replies.

In the world of 3rd gen RX-7's, one of the common tricks is to replace the pre-cat with a downpipe for a little extra hp. When you go for inspection, you put the pre-cat back in. From what I've read it looks as though it may even be possible to put in a second cat on the SR20DET 240 for a day.

As far as the Silvia conversion is concerned, I don't plan on stopping with the SR20DET. It's just that body work and other little things don't tend to raise flags at inspection time.

Thanks for the friendly words, NiteKids. When I'm done, I'll send you a picture of my Silvia parked next to my RX-7 Type RZ. ;)
