differential means nothing to the engine. That said, it doesn't matter. Get one that fits the car.

well im getting a 240sx(no LSD)real soon with a KA motor i want to learn how to drift and practice with the KA motor for a while and then swap it with a SR. so when i swap motors am i going to have to swap the diff. or do i use the same one that comes with the car? im asking the question because im trying to decide wheter to get a really good LSD now or buy a ok one for now and when i do the swap buy a better one. thanks for the help

Searching would answer this question (or, at least, offer insight). There are those who say you learn better while compensating for the lack of an lsd. There are those who say otherwise. There are those who say that you should gradually get better equipment as you progress, and others who say doing so is a waste of money. Seriously, just do a quick search and you'll find at least 8 or 9 of these discussions.

You know what, I think this is one basic question that searching cant answer. I guessing you have a primarily FWD backround no?

I a FWD car the transmission(or more accurately transaxel) contains the differential as well. So an engine swap that would require a new trans would require a new diff.

RWD the diff is between the two rear wheels, and as we said has NOTHING to do with the engine/transmission combo other then the fact that they are connected by a driveshaft.

yea i had a acura integra b4.

yea i was just a little confused because a swap in a FWD car requires the removal of the tansaxle(where the LSd would b located). i didnt really know what u need to do a swap for a RWD. So if i do the swap from KA to SR i would just connect the new SR transmission to the cars(s13) original driveshaft right? and another question, which diff. is better the one from the KA or SR. THANKS A LOT FOR THE INFO.

Yes

So you understand that on RWD cars the diff has nothing to do with engine transmission then you turn around and ask which one is better, the KA or SR!

The engine/transmission has nothing to do with the diff/lsd. 240's either came with an LSD or didn't. They are all the same. The only thing that changes on them for OEM Nissan LSDs is the gear ratio.

They both had the R200 diff.Im very not jdm so forgive me if Im spouting off missinformation but I belive t hat because of the differance in power they might have changed the geat ratio for the diff its self. It probably would have came with the same open, or viscous LSD that they did here.for drifting you probably want a clutch type no go click the search button, and search in the 240 secctions, and the drifing sections For "LSD Drifting"seach both thread topics on post bodies (there are two choices in the lower left on the search screen)There should be tons of stuff on LSDs and drifting for you to read, that has been a very common topic of discussion.

I think learning how rear wheel drive drivetrains are layed out and work will be the best start. Raise your car. Spin the rear wheels, look at the moving parts. Or search a bit and you will learn a lot more.

Not to be funny, but this would be some beneficial reading to help your situation (goodness knows, it has done wonders for me):

Also, be sure to check out the links in the "more info" section at the end of the article.
