can a bad thermostat cause no heat?

well i currently purchased a 240sx.. and i was told "the heater lines werent hooked up" but i took it to a 240sx shop called tougefactory, and they told me the thermostat was bad and the heater lines were actually hooked up.. can this cause me be have no heat?

Heat in what sense? Like heat going through your heater core so you have heat in the cabin or heat as in the engine isn't warming up to temp?

heat as.. the heater core.. like it just blows cold air.. i live in chicago, it gets fairly cold -=(

My car had its thermostat removed before I purchased the car by the previous owner. This caused me to have no heat and it would only blow cold air. In the winter, the temp gauge would barely move.

Its possible you either don't have one, or that it went bad in the open position.

stuck in open - no heatstuck in closed - overheated the motor w.o even knowing

sux no matter what.get a thermostat and replace it. Its cold here and its a cheap fix!

i currently have no heat as well, i beld the cooling system by: removing rad cap, removing bleeder screw, filling till bleeder over flows, replacing bleeder, letting car run for 30 min, shut car off, add coolant to rad. and replace cap. i belive this is the correct way to do it. still no heat however. so next is to replace thermostat. could someone post a pic of where it is and what it looks like. also a little walk through would help as well.

well i replaced the thermostat.. still no heat -=( i was told the thermostat is not opening up? is that possible?

if the thermostat didnt open it would overheat. sounds like you have air in the heatercore, or possibly frozen core.

how much do u think it would cost to replace the heater core?

tip the car back (using jackstands) with the heater on the full hot position when refilling the coolant.

it works now.. the cable wasnt connected.. all this trouble and to find out the cable wasnt connected.. (the cable that opens the vent for the warm air) it was disconnected or cut somehow..

lol, well at least it works now. i jsut put in my thermostat and am waiting for the gasket to dry.....well see what happens *crosses fingers*
