I just bought my first 240. It is an 1989 KA24E. Unfortunatly when I bought it it had a blown head gasket. Well I decided to try and change it out myself, and didn't really have to many problems untill now. I am having problems getting my camshaft sprocket off. The Nissan service manual I have shows a tool to use to hold the sprocket in place while lossening the bolt, but I can't find anything that even closely resembles it anywhere. Autozone does offer a tool in their loan-a-tool service, that is labeled as a camshaft sproket puller, but it looks nothing like the one in the manual. If anyone knows where I can find the tool to get this done, or what it's called, I would greatly appricate any help I can get. And if it would help, I can scan a picture of the picture in my service manual for an example.Ryan

Use an impact.

They also make something similar to that but it has another small arm on it that pivots. I just can't remember what it was made to hold.

You could always make your own out of a piece of angle iron or something similar.

Actually I just remembered what that tool was. It is used to hold the flywheel on Yamaha's jet ski motors and it is sitting in my garage.

if your doing the head gasket might as well change the timing chain. dont bother removing the sprocket if you do the chain too.

Does the camshaft not have a 6 flat sided spot where you could put a crescent wrench? I know for sure the DE cams do. then you just use the wrench to keep the cams from turning while using an impact on the bolt.

Ratchet extension bar. Works every time. Just get someone to hold it for you while you break the cam gear nut loose.

that works too here...but not everytime :) try using a ratchet and extension to take your underdrive pulley off. :)

Well, I took a little bit of everyone's advise and, about 2.5 hours after I started. Got the head off. Used a really long screw driver to hold the sproket in place, then placed a peice of PVC tubing around two feet long around my ratchet handle to get a bit more leverage. And the nut holding the camshaft sprocket on came right off. Thanks to everyone for their help. And pictures of everything can be found at.

Did you mark the timing chain so you can get it back in right?

Hell yeah man, that is one thing I learned from doing the about 500 head gasket changes I did on my dads motorcycle. Believe it or not the procedure is about the same on both, just on the motorcycle, everthing is a wee bit eaiser.

My dad used to race motorcycles. So every few months we'd have to change his head gasket just for preventitive maitnance purposes. Better to just change it then risk having it blow in the middle of race. So after watching him complete the process a few times, I pretty much figured out how to do it on my own.

I I had the same problem. My sprocket had no holes. I don't know what kind of damage I may have done but I simlpy put the transmission in gear and the crank sprocket held with no problems.
