camshaft rust

So, I've got a little rust on my camshafts, it went through a parts washer, and then was left sitting for a few days. It's not pitted at all, and not really all that bad, but it doesn't have that shiny polished look anymore. I was thinking of taking some 1500 grit sand paper to it. Is this a bad idea? Any other suggestions?

That's very minor surface rust and can be strong armed off the lobes with a terry cloth rag.If it doesn't budge look for some spray on rust removers.I really wouldn't try sanding until its a last resort.

Ok, I got most of it off with Wd40 and a cloth rag. It looks like it is just stained now. I was thinking about getting some rust stain remover to clean it up and make sure it's not pitted anywhere. I don't think the rust stain remover would damage anything. Does this sound like a good idea?

scotch brite pads from any parts store and wd- 40

scotch brite pads from any parts store and wd-40 the scotch brite pads aren't coarse enough to scratch the lobe but will scuff the rust right off of it!

Just put them in now they are wiped down. They will get all nice and shiny with oil and wear.
