camshaft position sensor on a 96 j30

i had to replace the water pump on my car, and had to remove the cam covers and the camshaft position sensor along with the crankshaft pully to get to the pump when i put everything together my car seems to be out of timing and misfiring. how would i reposition that sensor or do you think its even the sensor causing this issue because the timing was never touched only that sensor and pully any suggestions
