On way home engine light came on and HUM system emailed me my camshaft position sensor has failed. So when I got home turned off motor. Will not restart. Read online that sensor can cause a no start. Please someone tell me it's something the average change oil, battery, plugs, kind of guy can do or get to? If not, how much am I looking at? Any info is appreciated - 2005 F-50 108,000 miles.

I have replaced them on the G35 before. Not too bad of a job. On the G there's one on each bank on the back of the engine. Maybe a front one too, but I don't remember for sure. One plug, one bolt, and whatever you have to take off to get to it.

Your code should mention which one is bad... On the G it causes a hard start, and will sometimes cause the car to shut off. Not sure about a no-start condition. I normally discourage parts store parts, but I've had success with the standard motor products reboxed stuff from Advance Auto. In my case I needed a sensor that evening... on a friend's G price was a major factor. If I were replacing one on a car I was planning on keeping for several more years, I'd search for the Hitachi parts on www.rockauto.com or another reliable source (e.g. not eBay or Amazon where counterfeit parts are abundant).

Thanks, I did find Hitachi parts for the replacement sensors. I too have 2 sensors, bank A bank B. From what I can tell they are the same sensor. As I get further into it I'll be able to tell if there's a difference.
I googled the info and clicked images, got a rough schematic of there location. After I replace, bolt, and plug in the new, am I ready to try and start or is there anything or process necessary since this involves valves and VVT and such....?

Here's a link to help you locate the camshaft sensor. Just remember that there is only one camshaft sensor. It is the same part as used for the crankshaft sensor under the vehicle at the bellhousing.

Hey Ed would are you sure there's only one? It shows all over on-line there's two. But Orieleys system shows one... One would be nice!??

With a very high level of certainty I can say there is only one for every VK45DE in the states. Check out the 1st link at least.

Wow.. So much and yet so little info on these cars/motors. Man I hope like hell I go out to the driveway and find this to be exactly as on my 05 Vk45DE. Ed I didn't understand what was meant about crankshaft vs camshaft sensors and Nissan name play. However, my P0340 correlates to the number 3 sensor correct? Number three is my camshaft sensor the P0340.? (I wonder what sensors those are that they are saying is two camshaft sensors, back of motor under side of valve covers?) anyways, I'll go try this.. Man I hope so..

EdBwoy I am at a loss, after reading the second link, that is the story I am dealing with. What are the sensors on the back of the motor? Why are the part numbers identical? Some info I get says two are on the back, and then this revelation of one on the front. Also, I've never let the oil get below the half way mark between the holes on the dip stick. But right now it's just above the bottom hole. Could this be my issue with the sensor? I read somewhere these sensors use oil for function?? So if I am getting P0340 I need to replace number three in your picture and quite trying to figure all this mess with sensors on back.. Just replace number three with the new camshaft position sensor I bought at Orieleys?

Glad you got it sorted out.

Sorry I couldn't respond earlier.
This is how I can attempt to clarify:
V8 - m45 etc
- all relevant sensors are on the front face
- only 1 camshaft sensor
- camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor are the same part
- those 2 sensors on top are for the variable valve timing system
V6 - m35 etc
- the camshaft sensors are on the rear of the engine
- 2 camshaft sensors

One way to troubleshoot this code is to top of the oil. In my experience this is more relevant to the V6. Once the code pops up on your V8, then it's time to get that sensor.

We must have a good repair shop here in Oklahoma City, got my camshaft positioning sensor fix (parts and labor) for 108 bucks! They even towed the car and the place is at least 5 miles away from my home.
