HKS and JUN are other common options. Another option is to have a reputable cam company make one up for you or possibly regrind your existing ones.

JUN. Tomei keeps saying "out of stock". They have been out of stock for over a year. That is commonly known as out of production. I called JUN and if they don't have it on the shelf they will fire up the mill and cut em even to just do one set. You will of course pay for it but at least they will do it.

Any idea how much JUN would charge for the cams?

Get up enough cats that's committed to bettering their car's performance and I'll gladly arrange something that'll save you guys some $$$s. But if they don't want to, don't sweat it, for I'll point you in the right direction and see to it that you get a good discount.

Thanks Dee ---Any idea what type of $$ a Regrind would be---so people can see if they are really into doing it --or just playing around.

I am figuring we are talking approx $500? ??

As for everyone else ----Who needs CAMS. Tomei is out of it. Mad Scientist figures $800 or so for a pair of Juns. --Who is seriously into getting some camshafts for their motor.

we tried many times to get a group buy going and it has always fizzled out. Good luck.

$500? No way man! I can get them done in the lower $300ish range. I just got some more for an engine I'm building as well as got some for Kapower06. There's a few people with CAs that are running the regrinds that I test piloted years ago and they are indeed worth every dollar spent. These cams were based off some Tomei cams I have in which one snapped in half, but I was reluctant to keep the same profile, so I had my regrinder get as close to the 270 with the 9mm lift as possible and he did just that.

what are your power targets? I fitted tomei 256 cams and i didn't find they gave me much in reality, just pushed the peak power up the revs. a 256/8.8 inlet and a standard exhaust cam will be good for upto 400hp. 270 degree cams are a joke on a CA.

Turbo choice and cam choice is related closely, what are you planning

In what regards? Just curious to hear your take on this. Although I will add that if you're going to be running the car with near stock components, don't waste your money on cams as the stockers are good enough to support better than 400hp.

You are probably directing this at the original poster ---but I would love some guidance from those who know their stuff.

I currently am running a stock Ca with Chipped ECU/444cc inj, GT28R, Intercooler, 3 in exh etc. The Car is a dedicated AutoX and Track day car (HPDE and Time Trials) --I do not have a specific HP goal, but would like more power and a higher powerband ---without sacrificing too much low end.

As mentioned the motor is stock right now, but I have a spare that has a new crank and bearings etc--Planning on some new pistons with a slight overbore, Rods and then get some porting and polishing of the head. But still need to run on pump gas --not race fuel.

I guess I would use the cams in the current motor as I build up the other (I keep putting that off) --PS I am a hack mechanic

Any suggestions? Dee What is the driveability of the motors with the 270's. Are they top end only type motors ( I think you drag race right) or is it a decent powerband.

The driveabilty is pretty good, but there will be a little hp loss in the lower rpm. But from about 4000rpm till 8200rpm you will notice the difference (Trust me on this one).

mmm 8200 rpm. I would love to make power at that rpm. I heard you are still on stock bottom end. Is this true?

Yes you supply your own cams and the shop regrinds them to the new specs.

Not sure what is involved, I assume they change the lobes for the new lift and duration specs.

i have been told to go with a regrind but where do most people go though to do so?im runnin a port and polish job a 3 angle valve job some dsm 450s i got a t3/t4 60 trim, lightweight flywheel stock bottom end, ka throttle body every thing it port matched...thats the most of the set up.....turbo might get changed out depends how it feels but i want a set of cams to open her up a bit w\o having solid lifters...this was my daily and prolly will be most of the time when it gets going again i do slide this car from time to time when i can afford to go to an event... but thats it so far

Almost stock, but the crank has been re-ground and it sports CP pistons. The stock pistons would've been fine, but I had an opportunity to change them, so I did. And those old stockers are now happily in someone else's engine .

not all cams created equal, particularly concerning advertised duration "numbers". 270 degree is just that.It may tell one what to expect from a cam, but no way gauranty such performance. I believe Jez of sxoc had some interesting results using 270s. Back to back tests are the *only* way to measure a cams worth.

Major japanese brands are pretty consistent in quality results.Lots of proven combinations dynos shown on ns.com & sxoc.Mobne 497hp is pretty solid performer with 260/8.8 Tomeishttp://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=299176

Regrinds are a gamble, so I'd stick only to the tried and proven.Take a look at what DSMs went thru before they could source an "HKS equal" @ ~$440 a pair (vs just under $700 for the HKS) - so you can see its possible, *only* with a 'quality design/grinder'. Crower, Web, etc. for example, could not deliver

Big Tones old 20G setup was an excellent performer with "Piper reprofiles". His most recent monster has a sick torque curve, but I don't know if same cams used there. Strangely not much support for Pipers on sxoc tho.

Intake-only 260-264 degree cam increased street CA18s performance considerably. Similar to how this miata gained 45hp atw. Added an exhaust cam + 32psi, the 50 trim turbo now @ 590hp WITH excellent torque. Same recipee would work wonders for a ca18. http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=243805Due to being a R&D, he couldn't say who ground the cams. Corky Bell mentioned Competition Cams in another miata thread, and I believe thats who did the FPs for the DSMs... hmmmm

Recent sxoc buyer got Jun cams in one week, but.....Some show new Tomei cams purchased in a recent thread here ?Seen some(nico, sxoc & ns.com) claim Tomei cam pair are still available for $460usd... ??? Fair price for proven performance imo.Don't see much sense gettin' raped.... still only a pos 1.8L And as suggested, cams desirable if lookin well past 400hp

he did indeed, and though he's never said the exact results (he's in it for making a living afterall) he did indicate it didn't work well and the 270 degree inlet cam was removed and the 260 re-fitted. I've got the engine in bits on my bench at the moment actually

Well it looks like Tomei is not out of the CA cam business--just not making on a regular basis.

RHDjapan got 10 sets. 256's only.
