Is the gear that is attached to the end of the of the camshaft refered to as the cam gear, or is the cam gear one of the other gears that spins the timing chain? If it is, then how do you detach it from the camshaft?

That is correct. The cam sprocket or gear is bolted directly to the end of the camshaft. To remove it (i assume you have an adjustable one you want to replace it with), unbolt the large (i belive 11/16") bolt on the cam. Pull up on the sprocket as you slide it off, it will be difficult. Do NOT drop the sprocket or let the sprocket come off the chain. If you do, you will either have to fish one or the other out of your oil pan or you will have to reset TDC timing. Swapping sprockets, you will want the new sprocket side by side of the old and just transfer the chain to the new sprocket. Good luck!
