cams and cam gears

got a sr20det s13 motor doing a complete motor build and im going with the 264 bc intake and exhaust cams i know cam gears help to fine tune the motor to get the best performance out of them but are they something i must have or can i run it fine with out the adjustable cam gear. there is alot of other things im lookin to buy and wondering the importance of ordering camgears or will i be fine without
