I realize there are tons of posts about cams here, and i've searched and read most of them but i just want to clear up something and find out something i couldn't find...

True or False? S13 DOHC cams will fit in a S14 head without any modification besides a few shims...

True or False? S13 DOHC's are 248/248 duration, and S14 cams are 232/232...

Now what i couldn't find is if anything needs to be done to the ecu to run the s13 cams in the s14 head...a few people mentioned that in order to run JWT cams(256), Nissan Motorsports(248), and even the PDM regrinds need some ecu tuning such as the JWT tune....so what about the S13 cams, do i need something done to the ecu to run them properly? If so why? And what does it do? I have a safc, and i'll be getting a msd box, so what else does the JWT ecu change besides fuel and ignition to run the bigger cams?

i thought the mod was the use the 91 dohcams were the better of the rest of the years. i'm sure the fsm has that info in it. and as soon as i find mine i'll see if that spec is in their.

true and false. if you do just a straight swap using both the s13's intake and exhaust cams (240/248), then all you need are shims. if you use the s13 248 exhaust cam as an intake cam for the s14, then you either have to have it repinned or make sure you "clock" the cam correctly. if it hasn't been posted yet, or no one does it before i do, i'll provide a link later

S13s are 240/248.S14s are 232/232.

depending on the combination of cams used, an ecu retune isn't always necessary...but it is a good idea to have done for best performance.

hey demcj, you say that you need shims to swap the s13 cams to s14, i didn't see anything about shims in any other threads about the cams though...

so are they needed or not? i don't wanna make an expensive mistake when i get some s13 cams

that's because i've noticed that some people don't bother to check their shims.

changing cams

awesome thanks, so i read that thread, and you have to 'measure the shims'. what tool do i measure them with, to be honest with you i have never really looked under the valve cover of my 240 so i have no idea what the shims are or where they are (im assuming under the cams and something they rotate on)

I've been using the search for the last two days and found lots of info that has still left the puzzle half apart..

Also where can i get new shims (if it turns out i need them)?and how much do they cost?

also, one reason i want to do a camshaft upgrade is because although the 232/232 powerband is torquey, it's dead meat after 5000 and I like top-end power more which it lacks greatly..

I also want to get cams that will work good with a turbo in the future, so im wondering if i should drop the money and get some PDM (256'ish degrees i found out?) or JWT (275/275). With those higher duration ones I would need cam gears in the future to reduce overlap for a turbocharged application would'nt i? or would cam gears help anyway even if i had just the stock s13 cams.

there, i got it out of my system, sorry for the long post but i think u can help me here demcj, or anyone who knows about this.

TIA!!

max  :help

JWT is spec'd at different than stock lift...so you cannot compare their advertised 275 duration to the stock 232...it's apples to oranges.

But FYI, JWT is around 256 degree when measured at stock lift...
