I will never street race again. Ever.

Driving home from the store w/ my girlfriend, trunk loaded w/ groceries, minding my own business. I stop at a red. I go when green. No biggie. I don't get on it or anyting at all, I just off start at a normal pace. All of a sudden a f*ing redneck SOB in a jacked up Dodge does a flyby (I HATE living in hick-ville Texas), hangs out his damn window and gives me the bird while laughing. F* THAT. I'm about halfway through third and I hit it. I start to reel him in no problem, but as soon as I reach his rear bumper I am out of gear. So I go to shift into 4th...

I hit second. Motor revvs past the tach (I have a KA tach...8k RPM+) and I freak, letting off the gas and IMMEDIATLY throw it in neutral (I prob hit about 8500RPM-9000RPM) BLAM. Backfire and glow from the rear of my car. I say out loud: "My God....there went my motor."

Other than popping my ghetto rigged throttle cable loose, and nearly giving myself a heart attack, the car is fine. No overheating. Oil level is good. Boosts fine. Revvs fine. Idles fine (for an open BOV). So I think I got REAL lucky. THe car Gods taught me a lesson that will NEVER be forgotten....

I will never run a car w/o a red line... Everyone makes mistakes and over reving isnt good for the motor.

Speaking of fire balls, my car shot the most insane fire ball on the touge two weeks ago. I heard this huge pop, thought the car hit something, and the whole hatch lit up red. I dont ever see that happen again even if it was bad ***. I just wish a friend was behind me to see the damn thing.

I'm surprsed that I didn't spin a bearing or toast a rod or even the timing belt. Damn the CA is stout!

Whether you have a rev limit or not, its not going to stop a bad shift to a lower gear instead of upshifting.

Rico got lucky, ive seen Honda websites with this one kid went into the wrong gear in his RSX. Lets just say his pistons turned into aluminum golf balls.

The dreaded metallic popcorn noise..

I was at a friend's place getting my motor mounts (in my NX2000) replaced when a guy had his Civic dropped off. He had put in an aftermarket ECU with no rev limiter and I guess didn't know what "valve float" was. His buddy said he was up around 9,000rpm when BanabBAnngBAGNGnbaNbgNAbgnMNABbBAnng..

When my buddy took the head off you could see the pins/rods THROUGH the top of two of the pistons..

Rev limiters are a good idea, they won't save you entirely from a miss-shift, but the fuel cut probably makes it more likely you'll survive..

I misshifted my poor silvia a couple nights ago, meant for 4th put it in 2nd, thankfully I wasn't too high in the revs, and I think I need ot adjust my clutch because with my foot on the floor it was still engaged, had to pull the gear out..Engine survived, hooray for high redlines :D

haha. sounds like i missed a party. rico, i wouldnt worry about your little over-revving situation. my friend raped the shiznit out of my car and i only now just replaced the bearings (after running it out of oil 3 times and driving for an hour w/ no coolant another time). the CA is the single beefiest engine i have ever encountered, when you mis-shifted it probably just blew out some cobwebs. just hope that buttmunch in the dodge saw the fireball in his mirror. if i saw a car do that i wouldnt mess with it or the driver.

btw, are you running a cat? i would think not because of the fireball, but i managed to fire off a massive one about a week before i parked the car, was giving it about half-throttle up a steep hill at night and shifted from 2-3. I looked in the mirror just as i did and the whole neighborhood lit up bright orange. i could see the smoke cloud surrounding the fireball clear as day, it was awesome!

as for mis-shifting, you could always make or machine out of metal a gate for the shifter like ferraris and lamborghinis have. you would never have to worry about shifting again!

Well since then, 4th is a biotch to get into. No grids or anything, but it seems harder to grab 4th sometimes...Mabye just me.

my friend upshifted his 2000 type r from 3 to 2nd once. he was at redline in second when he shifted. the motor spun to about 13,000 rpms, bent 12 valves, broke one piston, ****ed up another piston, and blew the transmission. when all the valves bent it locked everything up, which blew the trans and locked up the front wheels. the kid in the passenger seat had a bruise on his forehead for about 2 weeks.

holy shiat, that sucks. i would absolutely cry if i ever did that. actually i would just kill myself rather than try and explain it to my parents. i never like to let out the clutch so fast that i cant catch it if i mis-shift but i guess it wasnt in normal driving was it. i guess ive been lucky, hope i dont do it to my poor little car. i do have high-speed bearings on my side though, so only 85% of the engine will be trashed, haha.

Backhand the shifter into 4th. As in your thumb is pointing down as you push it into 4th.

Makes it very very hard to shift into 2nd that way. It's hard to drive a 6 speed this way(getting into 6th takes more sideways force), but it's a very good technique to learn.

That is actually pretty good advise, I do that anyway, shift back handed. It makes it so you're absolutely never going to put side-force on the shifter when pulling back to 4th, or you'll bend your wrist all funny.

I usually do backhand it (saw it on a BMI once and thought it was a good idea) but this one time....

I missed 4th and hit 2nd once in my 240. That's why I now have a rebuilt motor.
