It's not really that big an issue - the UAW and the top brass at GM, Ford, etc would like you to think it is though. If congress doesn't bail them out, the White House will. It goes back to the whole "too big to fail" issue. A total GM collapse would send the industrial sector of this country into total dissarray. Workers laid off, supply chains destroyed (causing smaller parts manufaturers to go under), raw material issues, etc...
The worst that will happen is that GM will go Chapter 11 and restructure, which will ultimately put them in the same spot, but doing it much leaner than before. I wouldn't worry about the company not being there to back your new Camaro.
