cam sproket on wrong?

i am doing a timing chain job on my SOHC and i dont think the sproket is on the right way. i did not take it off so its from the facroty like that. the dot on my cam sproket points at 9 o'clock and not at 3 o'clock. is that right?

Back up a bit. What are you trying to do? Line up the silver link with the dot? If so, just keep turning the crank till they line up. Might take a while. Maybe call your strongest buddy to help out, heh.

no i am not replacing the chain. just wondering if they are in the right spots. i saw a pic of another SOHC the the timing mark at 3 and not 9

When? When #1 piston is at TDC? Make sure you're on the compression stroke. Crank turns 2x for every 1 cam revolution.The way the sprocket is keyed...wouldn't the sprocket be facing the other way for it to be on wrong? Sorry, trying to help, but never worked on a 240.
