i have a s14 with an s14 sr and i am trying to make my car set up for drag, and i have been reading about upgrading cams. and was wondering why no one is upgradeing to the 272's. i not worried about the money i know i will have to upgrade the springs and retainers, i know that in order to run that i will have to disable the vtc and get new cam gears. I have been reading all over the place where people are buying the 264/264 why not the 272 is it just because maybe the 272 arent streetable. thanks

well if your going with step one 272's , then the 264 prob would be a better choice. only because they offer more low end grunt for the street

264's have much better low end and IMO are more streetable

I hear the idle on the 272s is really lumpy, and without going to solid lifters, they don't like to rev high without throwing rockers and breaking things

cams = 400retainers = 150springs = 160total = 700

upgrading to 272's will most likely hurt you in the 1/4 mile. i assume that you are currently on the stock turbo. that means that you will gain a very limited of top end power but lose an incrediable amount of low end power. if you are going to set up for drag, use that 700 you would have wasted on cams and buy a nice set of light weight wheels and some nice tires. that would actually help you.

i am all set with the wheels and tires. also i will be running a gt32 turbo. the only reason i am upgrading the cams is because there sounds like there is a horrible ticking sound, people tell me it sounds like a diesal truck. and the shop told me the tick is comming from the vtc solinod i already replaced the lifters and that didnt fix the problem. any ideas please help.

Even with upgraded springs/retainers I have heard of people throwing/braking rockers with the Stage 2 272s when shifting close to the rev limiter. There was something about that aggressive a cam not being good to run at high RPMs with hydraulic lifters.

your probally right. i have not ever looked into running an insane cam such as that.

importboy, have you checked your timing chain? i'm not sure if the s14 engine has an upper timing chain guide of not. but you may want to remove it. the tick may also be coming from your hydraulic lash adjusters and the only way to get rid of it is to bleed them and it is a PITA.

anyway. buying cams is a horriable way to fix a ticking sound.
