Post

Hello all. I am very excited because I think I might be buying a Versa next week after searching and waiting for the past FREAKIN 6 MONTHS...However I have two questions, and i've asked people before and never found any answers. This forum looks promising so i'll give it a shot. How is the CAM driven? Is it by a belt, chain, or gears? If it is by belt, is the belt easy to replace with a chain?Secondly, right now i'm driving a 2000 Chevy Cavalier. I love it, it's been amazingly reliable and GREAT on gas but it's a 2 door coupe and i'm sick of not having enough room for things and also having the huge heavy door slam on my butt when i'm bending over grabbing things out of the car (it hurts, i'm not joking, it hurts and there's dents in the door where I kicked it as punishment).Anyways. I have a 200 watt Bazooka Tube in my trunk. The factory stereo and battery is somehow amazingly able to work it fine with no issues (no lights dimming, no battery failure, etc..)but someone told me that since the Versa i'm about to buy is fully loaded with power that the tube might overload my battery...I think that is bullcrap but I figure it wouldn't hurt asking as I don't know much about car electronics (if I did I would have bought a real stereo bass system and not a cheesy tube :P).

Thanks.

not sure about the cam, but the zooka tube will not affect anything, whoever told you that was on a good one. WELCOME TO NICO!

In all my years of nerding out, I have never heard of anyone replacing a timing belt with a chain. Doesn't seem to me that the system would be designed to handle that kind of switch.

In any case, it doesn't matter, as the Versa uses a timing chain.

I've driven a Cavalier many times and I will state without hesitation that the Versa is far easier for entry and exit. You almost just slide straight out.

This is one of the unsung attributes of the Versa. It's so roomy for a small car. Getting in and out is a breeze.

now if it wasn't originally setup to accept a chain, they would have to get cam gears and harmonic balancer that would. i doubt there's really a conversion for something like, unless of course some company/individual decided to do so. i mean, it would lengthen the time between changes, which is nice, but i can't see going thru all the work for such a small gain.

it would actually be a huge gain i think, if you have a 6speed, because when you downshift with a belt drive it streches the belt after a year or so and well...this happened to my friends acura because thats how we drive everywhere...cant drive without downshifting. because he had the belt mested up for so long it ruined his motor...also whoever swaped the motor before him did something wrong and it was also destroying the motor...forgot the details this was liked 2 years ago.

actually chains stretch too. heat expansion affects both drive systems, tho i can't really see the main cause of his belt wear being downshifting. belts typically last about 70k-80k, but of course that depends on the environment the car is in, etc etc. chains usually last another 10k-20k over belts. the only real gain i can see over a belt is reliability, but without parts readily made, it seems more trouble than it's worth, imo.

Thanks a bunch, you all

Oh the CAM question is due to my father, he is a big time DIY'er and has saved the family a lot of money by working on our cars himself. He asked about the belt/chain/gears thing, says they all have pros and cons but prefers to work with chains as long as the oil in the engine doesn't get low.

So the Bazooka is ok? Cool. Anyone here have bass in their Versa? How does it handles as far as rattling and whatnot goes? I have no rattle AT ALL in my Chevy, just slight vibration of the rear view mirror that makes things look kind of watery in it when bass hits, but no rattles. I've been told I got lucky with the bass in my Chevy and that it will probably rattle a lot more in a hatchback car I hope not!

probably depends on the install really. sound dampening material, box setup, etc etc.

Be very mindfull of where you accept advise.. Your versa would be just fine with you 200w Bazooka tube. I currently have TWO - 15" Kicker CVR's and my battery is fine, god bless. I have taken the precaution of purchasing a 8 farad capacitor, but there are many different opinions as to whether caps actually make any difference at all. In any case, I am running 1600w. RMS in my "V"; all amps combined.

With regards to rattle --- yeah, I get a little in my dash more than anywhere else. Sound dampening is the way to prevent that, however I am running 8x more than you mentioned and I still haven't ran out to spend 600.00 to Dynamat the whole car yet. It's probably not gonna be a major concern with 200w. is what I am trying to say.

Hope my advise helped a little if at all. Be carefull, sound sytems get to be a clean man's crack after a while --- your no longer satisfied and need your new fix --- MORE POWER!!!!

i'm new to the forum, put a hold on a versa HB at the dealership, waiting for it to be shipped in.

the qr25de and qg18de engines use timing chain rather than belt. from what i can tell is that the qg18de (the 1.8L from B-15 body style sentra 00-06) is that it was dropped with the intro of the mr18de and mr20de engines.

i had a hardbody pickup w/ a ka24, and it was timing chain as well, and that motor was a workhorse for the truck application.

Every Nissan engine for '07 uses a timing chain. It's not that the belts were bad, but THEORETICALLY there should be no maintenance.
