my 93 240sx ran hot after the power steering pump seized and broke the belt. i had a head put on and it seemed to run better than it ever had but after driving it to town and back (about 20 miles) i had already burned over a quater of a tank of gas. i took it out agen and it shut off while at a redlight and wouldent start just backfired. after getting it home i took off the valve cover and notised that the exhaust cam gear had come loose and was slipping. i haven dun a compression test yet but i got the timing right and tried to start it but all i can get it to do is backfire. im worried i may have bent a valve or somthing. is there any way of telling without doing a compression test ?

Compression test takes 20 minutes. Just do it.
