my cars been down for a really long time now. someone mentioned that i might be a tooth off on my cam timing, which kinda makes sense now because when i re-installed the upper chain it was rediculously tight, no slack what so ever. all the pics i've seen of timing chains look like they have a little slack on top between the two cams. mine is very taught and straight across.

how or why would my timing chain be so tight. it honestly seems like it got smaller which can't happen as far as i know. this is without the tensioners too. my symptoms. the few times it has ran, it excellerates pretty damn good but as soon as i let off the gas it jumps and sputters. and the idle is very inconsistant. is it worth me taking the covers off and sending you guys a pic.thanks for the help.

if the engine is at top dead center your timing marks are wrong.

intake timing gear mark should be about 11 oclock and exhuast should be at about 1 oclock. in your first picture they were both about 12:00 and in your 2nd pic they are at 12:00 and 3:00.

could i maybe have the gears on the wrong cams. the cam lobes are pointing in the right direction, and the first pic is almost the same as the secont there is a little smudge of something at 12 on the exhaust.

zerothread?id=105618 like 1/3 of the way down there's a pic of the cam gears at top dead center, it's the same as mine i think.

I just looked back at your photos and yes I do see there is a smudge at 12:00 on the exhuast cam It appeared to me that was the timing mark. I can see it is actually where it is in the second picture. I am going to try and draft you up a picture of what the cam dowels should be at and what the timing marks should be at at. They look to me like one of the cam gears is a tooth off. but in anycase your gears are rotated slightly clockwise of top dead center.

When you bring the crank up to top dead center you should be turning it clockwise as that is the rotation of the engine. This puts the slack of the chain toward the tensioner.

that might be all it is, after i re-installed everything i never gave it another crank so mabe it's just the slack in the chain. also the cams seemed to only really go in one place they just sort of drop in where they need to be. is that supposed to happen?

Kind of, you need to load one of them up to get the chain marks to line up on one of the cam gears.
