Ok, well I guess everyone comes to points in their lives when a big, life altering decision must be made. My life has come to one such decision. I have recently been accepted to a few grad schools and have been to visit them as well. I have narrowed my decision down to UC Berkeley or UC San Diego.

Now, being from the east coast, moving out to California for a five year Ph.D. program is no small feat and I definitely don't want to choose a place that I wouldn't be happy in. While I did get to see both places, I don't think I got to experience enough of either place to really know what it would be like to live there.

I am asking the residents of these cities to enlighten me on their general feelings about their city. Please tell me the real feelings and not just the hometown pride stuff. I would also love to hear from others who have transplanted to these places to know what it was like to be new in the city. Thanks for your help.

UCSD if you wanna have fun. William Hung University if you're all about education.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. You'll have more fun in San Diego than you would in the Bay Area. Well, it depends on what you consider fun.. I have a lot of friends from northern cali that go to college in San Diego and they say San Diego and SF Bay Area lifestyle is about the same. It's not too wild and crazy like LA so you can't really go wrong with either school. I think you'll have more bragging rights if you graduate from Berkeley though..

Both are fun places to live, but I prefer San Diego. I'm a fairly recent east coast refugee.

It's a lot warmer outside. I wore shorts and sandals all "winter" out here. It actually got below 60 degrees once or twice. I had to wear a full wetsuit to go surfing the past couple months.

Vegas is only a couple hours away. I keep meaning to take a weekend trip out there.
