You can't calculate MPG from your gas gauge, because it's not accurate.
To calculate gas mileage, you have to start your trip meter at 0 after a fill up, then run the car until you fill up again, then divide the trip odometer reading by the amount of fuel the pump tells you that you've put in, and that's your fuel economy.
You get better gas mileage on "long trips" because at city speeds, the car is constantly accelerating and decelerating, and uses more gas to get around than when it is cruising at a constant speed on the highway.
You should have somewhere between 1 and 2 gallons when the fuel low light comes on. You shouldn't push it too far, don't go more than 20 miles with the light on.
