I can't figure out how much gas I'm using because I can't find out how much is in the tank when the empty light comes on (I've checked the manual).

So if I drive 230 miles and the light comes on what is my mpg?

Why is it SO different when I take car trips? I drove to San Diego and ended up 350 miles before the light came on.

How far have you driven after the light came on?

Okay I'm feeling really dumb right now...

You can't calculate MPG from your gas gauge, because it's not accurate.

To calculate gas mileage, you have to start your trip meter at 0 after a fill up, then run the car until you fill up again, then divide the trip odometer reading by the amount of fuel the pump tells you that you've put in, and that's your fuel economy.

You get better gas mileage on "long trips" because at city speeds, the car is constantly accelerating and decelerating, and uses more gas to get around than when it is cruising at a constant speed on the highway.

You should have somewhere between 1 and 2 gallons when the fuel low light comes on. You shouldn't push it too far, don't go more than 20 miles with the light on.

Thank you. That makes more sense than my "trying" to work it out. Thanks for not laughing at me!
