Hey guys.. I believe that my calipers on my J are bad on the rear.. I have two problems.. The main problem is On the Drivers side rear i cannot get the bolts off of the brakes, ect. I've tried liquid wrench, PB blaster and to no avail.. it wont come off and it's starting to strip... Any tips to get it off? Second is.. Can I just rebuild them? Do I just order the rebuild kit online from rock auto and Do i need to get a new piston or I can keep the old one? thanks guys!

Caliper bolt? The bolt that hold caliper to the suspension OR the bolt that holds the floating jaw of the caliper?

In my opinion, I will inspect the condition of the piston and the caliper itself. If there is a lot of rust (i think it is the case with your caliper), I will NOT rebuild it myself. I will just get a factory/after market rebuilt caliper.

Notice that a rebuilt caliper will likely contain RECONDITIONED (not new) piston.

the bolt that holds the caliper up and the ones you have to remove to get the brake pads off

i had the same problem...i ended up using a whole can of PB blaster a ratchet and a hammer....it toook some time but i finally got it...it ended up taking me all day because i got frustrated and ended up drinking a 6 pack and smoking a joint before i thought to use a hammer...ultimately i broke 3 ratchets and a heavy duty breaker with a cheater bar but i eventually got them off...FY Yoda mentioned something about a caliper rebuild kit which might be something you should look in to

I see which bolt you are refering to.

When metal gets oxidized, it will expand a little and release water (leads to more oxidation) . That makes taking off the bolt even more challenging.

It is ABSOLUTELY to find out what causes the bolt to freeze before deciding on the build. The worst is that the caliper has been overheated and deformed (the sliding jaw freezed and constantly pushed brake pads against the rotor)

Ive seen that a few times working on friends brakes. One MUST remember to use the high temp grease for the caliper slide bar thingie. Not sure of the correct name but its covered with a rubber boot.If that bar seizes up the pad wont release and the rotor will warp with a quickness.Along with getting most everything there red hot.The brake fluid should be drained and refilled as well because it will boil and have water and other corrosive shizz in it.Ive made good use of the one man bleeder gizmo I bought for about 10 bucks.
