is it hard to replace the front caliper...

No harder than replacing any 2 piston caliper on any vehicle. Understanding brake system in detail and how to bleed is the difficulty.

Rather than replace, rebuild is also easy with an oem kit of orings/seals and a method to clean and repolish bores and pistons.

How do you know when they need a rebuilding? Mine seem fine at 253K and have never been rebuilt.

Unfortunately it will be too late when you blow a caliper seal. If you survive you will realize you waited too long!
10 years or 200,000 miles is a good interval.
Brake fluid turns dark>black as the seals deteriorate.

My mechanic rebuilt 2 of mine. It was easy for him, but it took some time to get the parts and clean everything up properly. The third caliper I replaced, I bought from the guys in my signature. They are offering them for only $60 which is a steal considering they are genuine parts. Here is the link:
