My rear left brake's been sticking and I found out it was because one of the caliper guide pins was rusty. Not having any of the replacement rubber bits on hand, I just cleaned things up as best I could and re-greased it. I'm going to have to go into it again and clean it out better, but I need replacement rubber pieces on hand first.

Can you buy the guide pin boots for the rear calipers individually and if so, what are the part numbers? What about the little rubber caps that are on the caliper mount bracket just at the end of where the guide pins go? Are those caps for the guide pin slot in the caliper? If so can I get those separately as well?

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures or diagrams to clarify what I'm saying so I hope my description was clear enough.

It looks like you can buy the pins separate:

Part Number: 44140-V6701 (44139+C on illustration)
Part Name: PIN - SLIDE
Prod.M/Y:0889-0790
Prod.M/Y:0790-
I.O.S. Price: $8.16

Part Number: 44141-V6701 (44139+B on illustration)
Part Name:PIN - SLIDE
Prod.M/Y:0889-0790
Prod.M/Y:0790-
I.O.S. Price: $8.40

To get the boots, I think you might have to buy the kit:
Part Number: 44120-73L25 (44000L on illustration)
Part Name:SEAL KIT - DISC BRAKE
Prod.M/Y:0889-0790
Prod.M/Y:0790-
I.O.S. Price: $54.44

I'm not sure though. I'm just trying to help.

Infiniti does not sell the rubber pinboots {technically called caliper bushings} separately, but they are available in the aftermarket for about $10 for each axle.......search my older posts,as I detailed the brand/part number/vendor where I purchased both front and rear pairs of these pinboots- post would be about the time of 3 years ago or so

qship96 wrote:Just a helpful hint to my fellow Q drivers......I ordered rear brake pads and shim kit from IOS a few days ago and wanted to get the caliper pinboots/bushings as they are rubber and based off my last front brake job, probobly in bad conditon....Nissan does not sell these critical items without purchasing the entire caliper rebuild kit, which I dont need {$50+}

Found online pinboots/bushings kit for our 90-96Q rear calipers made by Carlson..part number 16099 for $9 from bestvalueautoparts.com {they have the front caliper boots/bushings also}

Thanks guys!

I didn't realize you could get those guide pins separately. At $8 for the part, I probably should replace the one in there because wire brushing the old rust off doesn't get all of it and there is bound to be some lurking in the surface pits waiting to return. Of course $8 from IOS probably means it's $20 at the local stealership :tisk:.

Thanks for posting that quote Lino; I tried searching for qship's post last night but didn't have any luck. Qship, does that kit include the rubber caps that go over the ends of the holes in the caliper where the guide pin goes? It looks like I'll need to remove the bracket from the car and clean out the guide pin hole with a wire bottlebrush to get all the rust out of there.

I'm kind of holding my breath about my Q because as I type this, she's in the mechanic's shop getting a safety inspection so I can her plated in the province I just moved to. At close to 17 years after the manufacture date and 272,000 KMS (169,000 mi), they're bound to find something they want to fix before they give me the sticker.

That's why you need to have a friend doing the inspection. Some of the guys can be real picky. But I suppose in your case, it's hard since you just moved to a new place. Which province?

Guides rusting and seizing are usually a sign of other issues - it just means they haven't moved.

Without hesitation, I'd recommend replacing your piston seals as well. You'll have to disconnect the caliper, blow the pistons out with air (DO NOT GET YOUR FINGERS IN THE WAY - OUCH), gently clean the inside (not wire brush, or a very soft one), and replace the piston seal. Rebuild kits are only about $30 per front/rear.

I've replaced only slides, only to discover that in 6 months it's slightly bent and stuck again - because the piston never moved in the first place.

Cheap words of advice while you have it all apart. Call Infiniti of Scottsdale and get the rebuild kits.

I just moved to Nova Scotia. It turns out their inspections are not as bad as the horror stories I've heard from Ontario or Saskatchewan inspections. I had to get a new windshield before I took it in and I took it to the shop the glass guys recommended to me since they seemed honest and friendly. The Q passed without any problems, although they mentioned it's borderline because of play in a kingpin on the front (that's likely to be the subject of a new thread, depending on what I find in the FSM). They're also getting about $300 out of me for a new exahust on my GMC van for it to pass, so that might have also helped things.
