Bottom Line - "Daily driver" unable to drive daily.

I sheared off the two 17mm caliper bracket bolts on the left rear caliper - the bolts are permanently frozen inside of the bracket.

These are my questions:

1) Is it possible to purchase just the bracket? I've checked everywhere with no luck (internet, local parts stores, etc.)

2) Do "loaded calipers" advertised on auto parts websites and in stores include the caliper bracket? I've asked, called, complained...no one seems to know

3) If I cannot purchase the bracket alone then WHAT BRAND and FROM WHERE should I buy the caliper (including the bracket)? I am not interested in any sort of upgrades (unless equal in cost).

Just to restate - I need the rear caliper bracket. Where can I purchase one quickly? side note - I'm checking a salvage yard tomorrow.

PLEASE HELP. I can't stand being unable to drive due to 2 bolts!

Thanks guys,Dave

did you get the caliper open or apart to were you can get the pads out ? if so . the whole pin bolt assembly will just pop out with a good tug an then you can have the bolts drilled out

Sorry for the confusion. The caliper bracket, referred to as the torque member in some manuals, is not part of the caliper itself. Rather, it is the u-shaped piece with two 17mm bolts that fastens the caliper to the knuckle (wheel housing).

K-Car, I think we are talking about the same piece. The bracket itself is threaded. The bolt slides from the interior of the car to the exterior, first through the knuckle (housing), which is smooth, and then threaded into the caliper bracket.

I actually wasn't working on the calipers...just removing them to "dig deeper" into another problem. The bracket is toast. I've used several metal loosening catalysts, drill bits, easy-outs, etc. The 2 bolts are frozen.

Fixing this bracket is no longer the issue...I need either a new/used bracket or a complete caliper with the bracket included. I'm competent with vendors/brands of American cars, but not too well versed on the import side.

Once again,Any help is appreciated,Dave

It's exactly what happened to me. I only sheared one, so I was able to remove one and pull on the calliper until I got enough clearance to remove the whole assembly. T tried undoing the lower control arm to get to room to work on the bolt but it's geomtery dosn't allow it to slide down. I found a bracket (it came with the studs and the boots) at a recycled parts store. Normally (unless you purchace them at the dealer) the callipers don't come with the bracket. I think junkyards are your best bet.

Also called the 'pad carrier'. It IS available separately through the dealer.

It took my a while to find this part. I visited two dealers and both told me they could'nt sell me the pas carrier separately. Even for the boots they wanted to sell me the whole kit (C$90!!!). But I live in Montreal, so I guess it depends on the dealters in your region.

Thanks for the replies....

It is fixed!:ylsuper

The dealership told me they don't sell them separately...rather as part of the caliper set ($260 for a reman.!!!). Uh-yah.

Spent the entire day calling salvage yards throughout the state of Missouri (my temporary home). Finally found an enormous yard in the Northeast corner that had several 1990 240's. Purchased the bracket.

Returned home, slapped everything together, began to bleed the system...no luck. Air was entering the system...the bleeder valves on both rear calipers were rusted, clogged, etc. The rubber seal around the pistons were on their last legs.

Luckily I had ordered a pair of "loaded calipers" from O'Reilly's on Sunday. They arrived this morning. As it turns out they actually had the bracket on the caliper...contrasting with what they advertised.

Everything turned out great.

Thanks again,Dave

- I'm replacing the master & slave clutch cylinders on Friday....will the bleeding never cease?!
